Re:Boycott Apple
The technology behind the multitouch screen we all know and love started when Wayne Westerman and John Elias started a company called Fingerworks in 1998

Re:But what if I liked the application
I'm fine with repositories and security updates, but nuking an applications without asking first is what Steve Jobs does and that Google is not supposed to do.
I hate iPhone OS policies as much as the next geek (why don't I get an upgrade for security on my original iPhone, even to iOS 3.1.4?), but even Jobs doesn't delete apps from your phone. Any apps once through the store, are yours, lock, stock, and barrel. They may prompt you to upgrade, they may stop selling an app, but they don't delete them. What google should be doing is sending these users an email and free SMS letting them know that they "should delete app $FOO because it's potentially dangerous. For reference, please see https://google.com/android/press-release/93857293875928.html" Maybe some people wanted these apps... like the friends of the security researchers in question.
Actually the iPhone has the exact same "kill switch" for the exact same purpose. http://www.iphonealley.com/node/2928

Re:Also missing besides folders: file protocol
I agree that out of the box, Safari has its limits, but FYI, a lot of what you want is actually achievable, though it requires some hacking.
To create a locally-stored home page (items 1 and 3) just write an HTML page and create a data: bookmarklet. Once you're looking at a DATA: page, you can add that to your homescreen and you can even access it with no network connection. By adding JavaScript and local storage you can make a pretty damn cool app with this. References:

Basically, bookmarklets kick all kinds of ass.

Google for more. And "History" can be accessed (AFAIK) by going Bookmarks -> History. iPhone has had this since Day 1, I don't have an iPad but I'm pretty sure it's there.

Re:I do not understand...
http://www.iphonealley.com/tips has a lot of them, but the example given above by jabithew is a good one - a couple of taps and everything is exactly where you need it to be for the next logical task.
Searching on google maps brings up a load of pins with results. Tapping on one shows a screen ready to take you to whichever task you next need e.g. email this location to someone, look at the homepage for the cinema you just found, call them, add the address to your contacts etc.
Other phones will do all this, but not with such effortless simplicity. Which is why I love it. -

Yup, it's back already

Real GPS feature coming to the iPhoneI would consider doing so for the GPS triangulation. The Google 'My Location' feature will now work with the iPhone. Additionally, here's a new GPS add-on, shipping in February for 89$, for the iPhone and iPod Touch. There's also TomTom who is rumored to develop a GPS add-on for the iPhone. See my journal for the rejected story last Friday on this subject.
(I don't have an iPhone and don't want one, aside from the fact that they're not available in Canada anyway ;-) (and oh, I think we're kind of losers of focusing on the bad sides of the new update instead of also discussing the new good features) -
Jail Break How-To
Reposted from: http://www.iphonealley.com/news/iphone-v1-1-1-jailbreak-apptapp-installation-guide
Jailbreaking Steps
1. Sync and pray
1. Sync your iPhone with iTunes. You'll be losing all of your information, so it's a good idea to back up
2. Downgrade to v1.0.2
1. Hold down the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds. The phone should shut down.
2. When the phone shuts down, release the Sleep/Wake button but continue holding Home
3. Wait until iTunes recognizes the iPhone. The screen will appear to be off, but iTunes will eventually recognize the iPhone. When it does, let go.
4. A message will appear telling you to restore. Click OK
5. Using your favorite browser, download the v1.0.2 software from this location. You may need to rename to .ipsw if it comes as a .zip
6. Back in iTunes, hold Option on the Mac or Shift on the PC while clicking Restore. Navigate to the software you downloaded and select it.
7. The phone will restore, but it will fail. This is normal.
8. Your iPhone should show a yellow triangle. Run Nullriver's AppTapp. It should bring you back to the Activation step on the phone and show an error in the application. Disregard the error.
9. Run AppTapp again and it should succeed.
10. If not using an AT&T SIM, use INdependence to activate your iPhone. That's it!
3. Create Symlink
1. If you haven't already, install Nullriver's AppTapp
2. Go to http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/beta in iPhone's Safari. Tap "Yes" to add to Installer
3. Plug iPhone in and open iTunes. Make sure it's recognized before proceeding
4. Using Installer, install "Trip1Prepz" located under "System"
4. Upgrade to v1.1.1
1. In iTunes click "Upgrade" and not Restore. Restoring will ruin our progress.
2. Once upgraded to 1.1.1, close iTunes
5. Jailbreak
1. Download iPHUC and friends from Rapidshare
2. Extract the contents so that iphuc, fstab, and iphonefs are all on the Desktop
3. If you don't have libreadline, download it and extract the zip to your Macintosh HD
4. Open Terminal.app located in Applications>Utilities
5. Type cd ~/Desktop and hit return
6. Type ./iphuc and hit return
7. Type getfile -
Re:The article is misinformed.
Well, there's this.

Answer: yes
...or, they don't need to.
And before anyone says that we "don't know" whether the iPhone has a user-accessible SIM tray, yes, we do.
And yes, iPhone will work on any GSM carrier; that's the whole purpose of standards like GSM, and iPhone is a GSM phone. Network-specific functionality (such as visual voicemail) will not work, but the phone and basic voicemail functionality, data functionality, etc., will absolutely work.
When Apple is ready to launch iPhone in Europe - it has previously said Q4 2007 - I have no doubt they'll be launching it, whether it's with one partner or multiple, or Apple makes some compromises to make a deal happen.
I also take issue with the article's claim, regurgitated in the summary, that selling iPhone without a simlock is "not an option" in the US. Several phone manufacturers
And before anyone says that the iPhone is subsidized, therefore it must be a million dollars without a contract, you're wrong. Even though a two year contract with AT&T is required for iPhone in the US, the iPhone is not subsidized - the price is what it is.
And mobile operators calling Apple arrogant? How amusing. Also, I have another idea: how about people stop predicting the doom of the iPhone before it's even out yet? -
Re:I'm betting the phone is user-openable
You appear to be exactly right.
