Re:Crazy kids and their crazy naming things...
I very much would like them to be able to call it "iPodCase", and "iAudioCase" instead of "gFruitProt" or "mKoreaBag". No need for originality here
:)
Point taken and understood. And yet notice that neither of the companies listed here that Apple is asking to C&D are not iPod accessory companies. iSkin http://www.iskin.com/ has made loads of profits, basing their product very much around assisting Apple with theirs. These TightPod cases aren't for iPods, and so to complain that Apple's actions are infringing on the ability of a company to properly represent the purpose of their product is moot.
My conjecture was that regardless its own motives (I apologize; "ulterior" was a bad word to use before), which I very much acknowledge, Apple's possessive nature results in exposing other companies that simply use the popularity of the name to what they believe is their advantage, yet what is eventually damaging to the diversity of the market and brand name recognition- the same recognition which oftentimes assigns the level of quality and reliability, regardless of what product line we're discussing. The idea behind calling it a TightPod is overtly based in name recognition and association with the ever popular, click-wheeled, MP3 storage/playing device, rather than embracing a more befitting, equally catchy product name.
I'd much rather have, say, a "LapJacket" than some starkly less original and misleading sobriquet for my laptop case. It's more descriptive and more unique, and it doesn't depend on the success of other names in order to motivate sales and can therefore make a name for itself. Which is what I thought was always one of the benefits of capitalism. -
Re:Users with scratched screens are still out in t
Or rather than leave it in a case, you can just put it into an iSkin. I have one and so does everyone I know who has an iPod. I've had my 3G iPod in the iSkin for about two years now with no special handling. I'd taken it out yesterday and there were some minor scuffs here and there, and a bit more around the screen (not on the screen) due to the screen protector loosing two of it's soft cushy legs. It's still in a resellable condition. If you own an iPod buy yourself an iSkin, they are amazing products. Of course they are coming out with a model for the nano very shortly as well. http://www.iskin.com/store/I2BeNotified.tpl Either put it in a case or a skin. Don't whine when it gets scratched if you've done nothing to protect it.

Skins/Screen cover
From my experience, I wouldn't trust exposing bear screens to anything. No matter how tough they are they will always end up getting scratched, be this digital camera, cell phone or whatever else is small enough for the pocket. The only real solution is get a skin, with screen protector or get one of the stick screen films designed for digital cameras.
I already got my self an iskin for my iPod, just to prolong the life of the base product. And for the iPod nano there is already a good selection from Decal Girl/ -
Two bits of advice....
I can't imagine you're really going to come across any problems you can't figure out on your own as far as switching goes... Except that you may be S.O.L. as far as drivers go, especially for sub-name-brand peripherals.
BUT as an iBook owner I heartily recommend two things:
This keyboard protector. Buy it now and use it. White keyboards get very gross very fast, and it's impossible to clean dirt, pet hair and whatever else out from under the keys. And believe me, that stuff will show.
And if you're daring, try This patch. It enables you to use an external monitor in extended desktop mode instead of just mirroring the iBook screen. Evidently Apple locked this ability out to make that feature in the Powerbook more appealing. It works great, but read up on it before you use it.

Re:no anodized metal?
The only signifcant drawback to the current material used in the regular iPod is its tendency to pick up scratches/fingerprints on its back.
Sure, but then again that applies to most portable devices. On the other hand you get some case for the iPod. Did a search with google:
- Applinks review
- iSkin evo, which even come in a choice of colours
[quick blink, "you must be kidding me"] looks like even Gucci is offering an iPod case. Now that's saying something. -
Re:That's what you get...
I got a slightly older one from Other World Computing, made specifically for the 2G 20 GB iPod. Just search for "iPod" at http://eshop.macsales.com/ . The ones you'd want would be in the category "iSkin iPod Cases - For 2G 20GB iPod Only"
Info on the iSkin I got can be found here. FYI it is generally similar to the new ones, but it doesn't have the belt clip and a screen protector is not built-in so you'll want to get some sort of protective film separately. They are still available on the official iSkin site but cost a bit more than at OWC. -
