Re:Low power server / clusters?
Jetway NF76-1G6E-LF 1.6GHz Via Nano fanless, single DDR2 slot up to 2 GB, 2 onboard sata, gigabit lan. While only 2 sata II 3Gbps on board, jetway has a line of daugther boards for their motherboards, ADPE4S-PB is the 4 port sata card. The sata controller both on board and the daughter board is marvel based and jetway has linux drivers available for download. I do not know if it is in the mainline kernel or not.
If 6 sata II 3gbps ports isn't enough, PROMISE SATA300 TX4 PCI SATA II 4-Port Adapter will give you another 4 ports.
*DISCLAIMER: I am NOT affiliated with jetway or with newegg. I have simply been considering a sillier project my self, and have not purchased the above mentioned products. -

Re:Recent Fedora
Hmm... recompile my kernel...
No, I think it'll be easier if I just stick with Ubuntu 9.04.
;)But knock yourself out. If 10.04 works again, that'd make me quite happy.

http://www.siliconimage.com/products/product.aspx?pid=28P.S. The PCI 4 port SATA card may be fixed now - but when I tried 9.10 in 2009, it detected it as an nVidia RAID Array (!) and obviously didn't function.

Re:Could the world of high-end PC graphics go Away
I have an HTPC based on a Jetway NC81-LF using onboard video (ATI HD 3200 Mobile Chip)
This little guy plays my BD rips no problem (I use Linux, no currently possible way to play direct from disc)
So even integrated chips can play this stuff. People like myself do not need any more than that.

Re:From the box of Office 14
My dream machine at the moment would have something like the PWRficient, a 64-bit PPC that consumes 7 watts per core at 2 GHz.
Then again, the Intel Core (2) CPUs are not half bad, as long as you use the "mobile" versions. Consider these for example:
http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLA98
http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLA49They are basically the "mobile" and "desktop" versions of the same processor (Core 2 Duo at 2 GHz, 2 MB cache, 800 MHz FSB), but the desktop version consumes twice the power of the mobile one. My question is, why are these dumb and wasteful "desktop" processors produced at all? The answer is probably that they are the Celerons of today, the cheaper versions that failed some tests.
It's a good thing there are Mini-ITX boards (like this one in my server/media center) for those who want to use "mobile" CPUs in a "desktop" environment.

Re:Integration nonsense.A power toy available from MS and the Nvidia drivers provide multiple desktop support; I've not used a non Nvidia card in years, so I can't comment on other manufacturers, but I'd expect their drivers to offer similar functionality.
My little brother had one of those in an old Dell 650 PIII. Performance was very poor, which is astonishing. Multiple desktops in the Linux world work well for hardware as modest as a 90 MHz PI and 16 MB of RAM, such as my old laptop.
The NT line is multi-user in that users are/can be completely separate. The Server line is truly multi-user in that you can have multiple users logged on to and using the machine simultaneously.
I've only seen this work with Magic Twin from Jetway. It did indeed use the windows API for it's time slicing, but required extensive hardware support. Worse, as far as I know, you still have to run things like IE and Outlook with root privs. At the same time, my old P90 works great as a card reader and I don't have any problems using it that way while my wife surfs the web with it using a ssh forwared browser from yet another computer. Windoze multiuser ability is anemic and adds nothing to the security of the system.
Don't use IE or Outlook/Outlook Express, use a firewall (as you should for any system), and you'll be fine - I have been for the 7+ years that I've owned a PC.
Why bother with windows at all? What does it offer that you can't find in the free software world? Why should I recommend it to anyone? What exactly are you trying to tell me, besides Winblows might not suck as badly as I think it does?
... a lot of malware requires user intervention to install, and there's nothing that Linux can do to prevent that.Mac, Linux and Solaris operating experience contradicts that line of reasoning. Blame the user is a poor excuse when you could just adopt a sane networking and user privs model.

2004 calledMicrosoft still could not do this.
Well, you can, but it's third party, very hardware specific and leaves you stuck with M$ XP. The Linux system demonstrated is a clear winner for schools, libraries, banks, casinos and other places where economical use of hardware is desired. While the Linux system might be difficult to maintain, it can be done. The Windoze solution leaves you dependent on the vendor. The people at Jetway have done an outstanding job but such is the world of proprietary software.
Anyone know of a better system? If you say citrix terminal services, I say, Linux Terminal Project and, cool as those things are, get thee back to 1975.

BIOS
You can change the MAC address of the on-board nic in the BIOS on this motherboard. I'm sure there's plenty of others...
