Re:Quick...

you got it man
It's actually kinda funny... those old games kick ass on my old Casio E125! I've got everything from Wolf, Doom, Quake I(1 AND 2! woohoo!) and even Age of Empires
:D
The only one that I don't have (and I hope somebody from Blizzard reads this!!!!) is StarCraft..
Actually I'd say that Age of Empires is the best so far. Few sacrifices made - even the music is decent.
SimCity!! -
Re:Why the small screen?
Can't *one* of these PocketPC-driven PDAs have a decent sized screen at 480@320?
How about 1024x768. It's kind of neat running a Jornada 565 at that resolution, but not very practical. -
Is Doom making all the difference?
WinCE-based PDAs are catching-up because, generally, the complexity of the programs availible for WinCE is more complex that those availible for PalmOS. This translates into better games. Have you seen Doom on a WinCE based PDA? Have you seen it on a Palm?
But boy if you want Games, I suggest you buy a Gameboy.
Both PalmOS and WinCE have fully capable basic PDA features, and PalmOS systems can be so cheap that one might be able to buy one of those and a Gameboy and still pay less than one would pay for a WinCE system.. -
Who knows. Pocketquake is coming along well enoughMaybe you were kidding, but it actually might be possible (though not on a Psion). Either way, Pocket Quake will do for now. Anyway, this mod seems to put a hefty surplus burden on my processor as it is. I wouldn't want to try it on a handheld. My Casio EM-500 Pocket PC, at 200MHz, (overclocked) can just barely handle Pocket Quake, itself, at a reasonable framerate.
With all the insane things that are currently running on my EM-500 as it is (e.g., Pocket Hexen and Pocket Doom ) that I'll believe anything is possible on those plucky little PPCs (yes, it's a microsoft OS, but their pocket gaming API has turned out pretty well and they're exponentially faster than the new Palms, so I'm willing to forgive them).

Re:WinCE Sucks
Although this is true, its kind of like saying 'linux sucks', 'MacOS sucks', etc etc.. The base winCE does definately suck compared the palm OS, but there is a lot more possibility there. Using plugins like Jimmy's Landscape you can turn the os on its side and use it width-wise. Since I started using transcriber for input, my WPM has probably doubled, and nothing beats listening to mp3's, while browsing the web at 320x240 colour all in a device the size of a palmIIIc.
For people who allready have an ipaq, you can add more storage using cf or pc cards with the add-on sleeves. For some reason, compaq made the add-on sleeves fat and ugly for this slim nice device, so there are lots of people out there doing modifications to 'slim' the sleeve - the nicest I've seen is this one at mobility.wox.org

Re:Hardware issue with ipaq
Bah, sorry to reply to my own post, but I just found an excellent in-depth explanation of the button issue with the iPaq. It's all at Jimmy Software. Of course nothing about a fix, yet.
-
Re:Game machine? If you want gaming, go for the Compaq iPAQ. It's got a 206 Mhz strongarm w/ 32 MB RAM. It currently runs Doom, and I believe a Quake port is in the works. Also, you might want to check out games like Turjah at Jimmy's. There is a problem currently with the buttons, in that it only registers one keypress at a time, however Compaq has said it is fixable and will publish the fix. The nice thing about the iPAQ is that the OS is in flash, so it can be upgraded.
Oh yeah, it can run Linux and X
:)

sorry no, maybe the cassiopeia line
This is a bogus idea (well more like compaq cheapskate engineers ruined it for us). The hardware buttons only allow one button to be pressed at a time. Thus, on galaga its -- move move move stop (let go of joypad) fire move move move stop (let go of joypad) fire.
only things like pacman, frogger where you only activate one button at a time will work...
see http://www.jimmysoftware.com/ipaqbutto n.html
The Casio Cassiopeia line lets you hold down multiple buttons and has a more ergonomic layout like the gameboy... -
button problem
The iPaq has a serious flaw in regards to the buttons. While most games will require simultaneous use of the directional pad and buttons, the iPaq's hardware can only process the input of one at a time. More information and hardware documentation can be found at http://www.jimmysoftware.com/ipaqbutto n.html

Re:dreadling is dreadful
Agreed, well at least from checking out the screenshots, anyway (I'm away from home and don't have my Palm with me to actually try it out). I think I'm too spoiled after the sweet sound and graphics of DoomCE (Splashscreen and aniGIF of different screens) -- Dreadling just looks so blocky and drab now. Plus, I really gotta give Casio major props for their cursor control, which I wish Handspring or some other Palm knockoff would steal -- I'm surprised that HP didn't catch on to their usefulness and steal 'em for their new devices. Now if only the MAME-CE guy would hurry up and come out with version 0.3 already! >:-(
Cheers,

Re:There's already DOOM for Windows CE
Not sure what you're getting at. The program I mentioned isn't an emulator, it's Doom (Jimmy Software has also released their own free port of Doom, Doom4CE). The only reason I mentioned the color GameBoy emulator is because the version of CE Doom that I mentioned is made by the same guy (guys?) who produced PalmGB. For anyone who's tried this amazing little piece of software, they know that these guys write some damn good code. (As does Jimmy Software, come to think of it.)
