I've looked at a bunch of different ways of playing and organizing my small mp3 collection (is 20GB still small?). Amarok has been one of my favorite aps when I'm using my linux desktop. When I've set up my file server to stream mp3s over the web to my office computer (running Windows), I've used Jinzora.

Now, both of these programs use a MySQL database backend to help organize and catagorize mp3s, and use id3 tag information. I think it'd be an absolute joy to have them share the same data, instead of using two redundant databases. Perhaps as this project matures, we could see this become a standardized format for multiple projects to use, so the information can be shared and edited more easily.

The Gallery project has a list of ideas for Google Summer of Code coders. This is a very nice, mature, PHP application used for managing pictures online.

Another great project that would be interesting to work with is Jinzora. Jinzora is a web-based music streaming/archiving application. It may be one of the best around.

Both applications are GPLed, fairly mature, actively developed and used, and are just plain useful tools to use.

There is a tool called Cantus that can be used for mp3 organizing. And of course, once you get them organized, you can set them up to be streamed over the web with Jinzora.

I was using Jinzora for a while and it's a pretty slick little php app that does pretty much what you are looking for:

I'd love it if you'd try Jinzora. I'm the primary developer of it (and loyal /. reader). We are nearing our 1.0 release, and we feel that Jinzora is simply put the easiest to us, install, and configure, and is the best looking of all the web based Jukeboxes around. Jinzora can stream via HTTP (including video), playback locally on the server (ala music TiVo), or frontend a shoutcast server so you can use it for a streaming radio station.
