Re:So don't use the name RISK?
Global War, a BBS door game.
It's still around. You can download it here. You'll need a BBS to run it any way other than hotseat multiplayer. Or you could log onto any one of hundreds of BBSs that could be running it. -
The Good 'Ole Days / AOTS BBS Segment
I'll definitely be purchasing a copy. You could say that I have an obligation to :)
It may be a part of history, but I dare say that the BBS lives on. There are still quite a number of bulletin boards, both traditional dial-up and telnet, alive and well in the world. My mailbox is flooded with:
"Hey John, I ran a BBS 10 years ago called <insert bbs name here> and am starting it back up, but lost my registration codes for <insert doorgame here>. And chance I could get them again?"
As further proof, the crew at G4's Attack of the Show have started their own multi-node dial-up WWIV bulletin board. I donated a set of doorgame registrations (though they only had a few installed at the time the show aired) to get them started.
Though, I'm sure it's nowhere near as extensive as the documentary mentioned here, ;) the 7-minute segment hosted by both Kevin Pereira and Kevin Rose explained what BBS was about, gave an brief history and also toured of the basic parts of the system -- including the infamous door games.
I could just imagine the pre-teens sitting on the other side of the tube thinking: "That's lame, the graphics are way to pixelated!"
I'm probably going to regret this (or rather, my server will), but I encoded the segment and stuck it online if anyone is interested in seeing it:

Now it's time I get back to working on those door games. -
Re:BBS Games?
The one I played most was Barren Realms Elite. Fear the Gooie Kablooie!

Re:The best?
I tried TW but I was a fan of BRE. (Barren Realms Elite.)
That game was wicked - your BBS against rival BBS's.
Check it out!

Falcon's Eye is a BBS door game...
Falcon's Eye was one of those nifty BBS door games like Usurper, Legend of the Red Dragon, Tradewars, et al. It came from the same author as the great BRE (Barren Realms Elite). Next time I name something I'm checking Google first....

Ahh.. Yes... BBS'sThere are still some BBS's around, as several people have stated.
There is one bbs package for linux, called Mystic which is available, that is very similair to the old school bbs package Renegade. Sadly, this program is not opensource. There is at least one bbs that I know of running this underneath linux, at telnet://xtcbox.org. Including running the old DOS games underneath DOSemu, like BRE, Lord and a few other door games. The reason I like Mystic over some of the other bbs packages for linux, is because it retains it's own user database, seperate from the UNIX database. The reason I like it better that way, is because then you don't have to "cloud" up your passwd database, although, there are advantages to the bbs packages like MBSE where it IS stored in the passwd database(which I don't personally like). Mainly, what this allows you to do, is use other system services like ftp and stuff to grant that to your BBS users. Also, you have Daydream BBS, which keeps it's own user DB, but the menuing system is a bit lacking. Also, there is a "wrapper" if you will for Mystic available, that is similair to ttysnoop. Let's you do what sysops love to do most - spy on their users. The "wrapper" also has a split screen sysop chat, and is available for CVS download at http://sourceforge.net/projects/bbslogin. Daydream has something like that too built into it, with it's program ddsnoop.

The *REAL* Falcon's Eye
I thought you meant this Falcon's Eye.
This was the One True.
Long live Mehul Patel! -
Re:Where's BRE ? *Right Here*
You can find BRE at www.johndaileysoftware.com/bre/ When i saw the web based tradewars my first thought was that there had to be a way to make BRE work on the web too. Maybe some people would be intrested in this... I guess I have a new hobby project just in time for the holidays. Get rid of nospam and underscores to email me.
