The Cost of Monoculture
Holy shit snacks, does that mean that one day I might be able to use Korean government or online banking website with Firefox???
Probably not, the country's extremely monocultural when it comes to computing tech. ("Not Invented Here" was one of the problems in the first place.) For example, nearly all the PCs there are Windows/Intel/nVidia combos... you really need to jump though hoops and/or be really specific when ordering computers to get anything else. And, only people at Daum and KAIST seem to even have any idea about Linux. Anything outside the Windows (IE6+)/Intel/nVidia mindset is not going to work.

Re:Dodgy conclusions...
But most importantly: South Korea has possibly the worst case of Microsoft monoculture in the world.
Of course it is -- how else is everyone going to be able to play Starcraft?

Re:Banks: Please Stop Using ActiveX !
Here in Korea (I'm no longer in_philly), most of the financial sites and numerous government sites such as Korea Post, use "obscure 'security' extension" ActiveX controls. But in Korea it has to do with Korea's adoption of the SEED cipher back in the 90s, and the inability to get 128-bit encryption from the Americans until 1999. Needless to say, it is a significant concern for me (an expat) as well as for regular Koreans. For my own part, I try to avoid such sites and do as much banking as possible in the US, but for most Koreans that's not an option. At least according to the article I linked above, Koreans are suing their government over the whole mess.

Re:Sorry, not even close
I challenge you to find a serious website that uses ActiveX for a serious use.

Re:Apparently
Apparently, the dupe detection software was written in south korea and uses activex to authenticate
This isn't a "dupe." The article you linked to was about South Koreans being advised to avoid Vista because their infrastructure is closely tied to Active X. The blog posting we are currently commenting on describes how the South Koreans found themselves in this situation.
