The Future of New Orleans
The whole 'why don't they abandon New Orleans' thread here is both incredibly silly and rather offensive. It is worth keeping in mind that N.O, was the site of a revolutionary war with the Brits, back in the day. This is evidence of the importance of the place, both then and now. Nobody ever seems to suggest that San Francisco should be abandoned, due to earthquake potential. Also, New York is hit by hurricanes too, but nobody suggests abandoning it either.
People also forget that what happened to N.O. in 2005 had far less to do with Katrina than it had to do with faulty levees. When Katrina hit N.O. back then, it was effectively a category 1, not more. The claims from the Corps of Engineers about cat 3 protection were just wrong.
My guess is that the 'abandon New Orleans' crew are just ignorant of the facts, or politically motivated. In 2005, we heard such comments from a n umber of politicians, mostly Republicans. For those of us who live in Louisiana and who know and visit N.O.on a regular basis, we know that it is a wonderful, vibrant and unique city. Yes, 2005 was a huge trauma, but as a tee-shirt that produced at the time said the city was 'bent, but not broken'.
So, rather than carping about things which seem to be poorly understood, why not do something useful? For instance, I will be riding out the storm up the road in Lafayette. The two TV stations KATC and KLFY will be broadcasting live to the web. As we have generators, we should be able to see what is going on by watching these feeds. However, guess what, we cannot see the KATC feed (generally, the better of the two, especially for weather) due to the fact that they have decided to go the Silverlight route and this is a Linux only household. If people want to do something useful, please take a moment and e-mail them a complaint at webteam@katc.com. This would be much more useful than carping on about New Orleans, when the whole issue about that place is so poorly understood.

Re:Congress: STFU.It's pretty pathetic that Wal-Mart did more to help the victims of Katrina than the US FEMA did, in the terms of cash and donated goods.
"Wal-Mart has given $17 million in cash, the largest corporate cash contribution to date, in addition to $3 million in products.
{USA Today] reports there are advantages to donating products instead of cash. The Internal Revenue Service allows a tax deduction greater than the products' costs..." Corporate Katrina gifts could top $1B September 13, 2005FEMA provided about $6 billion dollars in aid directly to Katrina victims Katrina fraud cases

There was a step in between.
I'm certainly not lying! I heard that the original creators of Fastback left the company. The events, which are all that matter here in a discussion about backup software, certainly support that conclusion.
Very soon, maybe at the next version, a version was released that was so buggy Fastback lost its popularity. By the time Symantec bought it, it was unpopular junk, and Symantec killed the product. It is a fact that Fastback rapidly went from the best-selling backup product to junk.
The name Barry Bellue rings a bell. I think Bellue bought Fastback for his company, as he did with many other products. Bellue thought he knew about technology, but apparently just happened to be in the right place at the right time. His next effort seems to have ended in a lawsuit.
After Bellue fired his California marketing staff, he put his daughter in charge of writing ads. The next ad for Fastback was shockingly poor. That's what I was told; it is a fact that the ads were terrible.
The same thing happened with PC Tools. After a junk version was released by a new CEO, PC Tools was sold to Symantec, who killed it.
I never understood why Symantec would pay so much for products that were already dead when they were bought. Apparently all Symantec got was customer lists.
The underlying issue is that backup software has possibly been the category of software with the worst history. -
WMD's have been found in Iraq.
Maybe I don't read the papers, but i do read the news online and in places not accessible to many here. Thousands of pounds of pre-Gulf War Stock remains in the bunkers at Al-Muthanna and Khamisayaa. Everything from mustard gas to cyclosarin to VX-2. Terrorists have used, albeit probably unknowingly, chemical munitions as IED's. Why was this not more widely reported? I leave that to your speculation. http://www.google.com/search?q=sarin+iraq+ied http://odci.gov/cia/reports/iraq_wmd_2004/chap5_a

BBC talks about us finally locating most of the 1.8 TONS of yellow cake, and 500 tons of URANIUM. Yeah, those don't count as WMD materials, do they...
Or wait: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/artic le/2005/08/13/AR2005081300530.html - from August 2005. Only 1500 GALLONS of chemical weapons located. Gee, those don't count as WMDs either, do they?
Or how about this: http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/11/25/iraq.mai n/
Or this: http://www.katc.com/Global/story.asp?S=1873019&nav =EyB0NBHX
That's just a start...
WMDs were there, they're being found. If you want to be an osterich and claim "NO WMDS FOUND!" go ahead. Those who actually use their own brains and eyes to see the truth will see you for the fool you are... -
Re:Cops that edited these Pictures...
It's also a crime to rape people, steal, view child porn using government property, armed robbery, and thousands more.
you're 100% right. they certainly do it all the time. -
Re:Not a first for Louisiana
Not that we're know for corruption down here or anything, but Roger Villere is also the chairman of the Louisiana Republican Party.
There were those who thought there might have been a connection between the florist licensing thing and him, but I dunno. There was also the home inspector license thing initiated a year or two ago, and now this shit. They're always whining that they need more money.. There was the "temporary" business tax-thing that got "renewed" because they need more money. And the Stelly tax joke.
How about instead of trying to suck us dry, we try to get all these fuckers to keep their hands out of the pot ?
It's no wonder nobody wants to do business in our state.
