Why does IPSec with Linux seem like such a hack? FreeSwan is pretty annoying - why don't they just get IPSec into the kernel and go from there? Instead there appears to be a megapatch.

Because Linus lives in the US, and Linux is thus distributed from the US, and until relatively recently, it wasn't legal to put IPsec source on a public FTP server in the US.

Now it appears to be legal, assuming you follow particular procedures, and kernel.org does explicitly say that they are hosting crypto software now. I guess the kernel development process hasn't caught up to reality yet.

Well, I don't know about that. I've been using ReiserFS since about 2.2.17 or 2.2.18, and it's worked great. It was officially integrated into the kernel in 2.4.1 (at the end of January this year), and distributions started incorporating it soon after. (Actually, before that, if I'm not mistaken. I was installing my work laptop last November, and the then-current version of SuSE supported creating ReiserFS partitions during the install even then. Wound up going back to Debian, though.)

So journalling's been available to the masses for a while now. Or maybe Michael meant ease of converting for the installed base?

Now if only the damn preemptible kernel patch would make it in. Unfortunately, it looks like that's going to wait until 2.4.5. *sigh*...

Kernel.org is running a VArServer 700 with a total of 400 GB of storage on a 100 Mbit/s line.

The OS is Linux with an Apache Webserver.

This is all according to http://www.kernel.org/powered.html. So the server is NOT running Windows and IIS as some (stupid) AC posted here!

No information about kernel version though....

why, back in my day, we got nine stable kernel releases, and that was it! oh, sure, some times we'd get as much as thirteen - though those cursed releases from 1.2.10 to 1.2.13 were for the ignorant masses! anyone who knows their stuff never uses a kernel with a patchlevel of 10 or above.

Is it me or is msn.com in the background on another computer in the Jack O Linux pictures(not the kde one, but look behind it to the right)... Maybe they should have chosen kernel.org as a background picture instead.(Or any other linux related site)
