Bang!
I like using Bang! for my news/blog stuff. I have tried a number of photo album tools and none of the ones I've looked at is what you'd call noobie friendly.

Re:Who wouldn't?
Your server's CPU load for that site would be a lot less if you just used SSI for the headers, footers, and whatever else you needed. That's what I do for my site, and I'd be willing to bet that, given an equal number of hits and bandwidth usage, my CPU load would be less than yours.
For many sites that get /.'ed, it isn't that they run out of bandwidth, but that their CPU load burns up the processor because the webmaster thought it'd be fun to dynamically serve up their image gallery, even though static HTML with SSI (and a Perl or PHP script to regenerate the static HTML pages when new images are uploaded) would have been enough. -
Re:Who wouldn't?
OC12Host
They're cheap (dunno 'bout $1/gig, but you're paying for more than just the bandwidth), the service is pretty good (though, I must admit, I've never had to deal with their customer service department, so I have no idea how good that is; on the other hand, the fact that I've never needed to deal with their customer service department says a lot), and the only difference between the cheapest and the most expensive account types are how many gigs per month you get, how much disk space, etc. (all accounts get the same services: Perl, PHP, MySQL, subdomains, SSH access, FTP access, etc.).
I've been using them for almost a year and haven't had any problems, although my site is fairly small and pretty low-traffic.
If you want to have your own server, try SA Net Hosting. Never used 'em, but they seem decent enough, and you'd be supporting Something Awful, which is a damn funny site (although, lately their articles haven't been so good). -

Not 100% on-topic, but still relevant IMO, is this picture

Re:Status Blog now has info
If you want to host your own site, but don't want to bother with Slash, check out BANG!. It is pretty easy to set up, and is fairly lightweight (no MySQL required or needed, very low CPU load). It probably won't run on Windows servers (AFAIK no one has ever tried to), but if you're the kind of person who would run Windows on a web server then you'd probably be better off sticking with a service like LiveJournal anyway
;) -
Re:Unless you have 28 years of once daily entries.
I agree. For many purposes, MySQL is just not worth the server load.
People who don't have MySQL for one reason or another (don't want to bother setting it up, web host doesn't provide it, etc.) can check out BANG!, a lightweight news/weblog script. -
Re:Blogs, who need em?
I use BANG!. It's remarkably easy to set up, and very lightweight (no MySQL database and minimal CPU load).
The advantage of using a web-based news/blog system is that you can post from anywhere you have internet access. -
Re:Missing option:
Blog is shorthand for web log. Some would consider Slashdot a blog, since the authors are only posting whatever interests them, but most blogs are just Joe User posting inane crap like, "Ok, I'm going 2 the movies 2nite. I hope Ring doesnt' sux0r as bad as XXXX! Hahaha!"
BTW, if you want a news/blog script, but don't want to host it on somebody else's web host (read: you have your own space), and you can run Perl CGI scripts, check out BANG!, a nifty little open-source news script. -
Re:HUH? Wait a second...maybe...
In a fit of nostalgia, I bought an SGI Indy a few weeks ago (check it out right here) and it cost $100, and was manufactured in the early-mid 90s. Definately not SGI's latest and greatest.
SGI's latest workstation is the Octane2. I think the Indy was first previewed by BYTE magazine (or a similar mag) in 1993!
