Re:They finally did this
"Mitnick is a shithead. He broke the law, then got screwed in prison
Mitnick was held in prison with murders and psychopaths for four years eight months in solitary until he 'confessed'. The only people doing the screwing were journalist John Markoff and Tsutomu Shimomura. It was Markoffs sensationalist articles that caused Mitnick much noterity. What Markoff never told him was he was both working with Shimomura and also feeding information to the FBI. At the same time cultivating a friendship with Mitnick to write a book. The only crime Mitnick was guilty of was trusting people.
"I could be moved out of solitary on the condition that I waived my fundamental rights and agreed to: a) no bail hearing; b) no preliminary hearing" -
I wouldn't believe everything in this story.Note that this article is by John Markoff, who has established a history of trying to milk arrests of people for his own personal profit, by not only sensationalizing security breeches, but assisting authorities to the point of being on site during the arrests, and doing book and movie deals afterwards.
Don't confuse this story with independent journalism; Markoff is out to make a mint here, however he can.
Markoff reportedly was pissed of at Kevin Mitnick for spurning a movie deal, and later set himself up to write "the Kevin Mitnick story", earning over a million dollars in the process.
Here's a link: http://www.labmistress.com/kevins_story.php
So one really has to wonder what the Truth is here, and whether Markoff is just trying to screw over some teenage kid in Europe in order to make another million off of it.
So I'd take anything that John Markoff has to say with a LARGE grain of salt. The same goes for the New York Times, which has officially encouraged this practice.
The real truth is probably out there; but I wouldn't expect to hear it from either John Markoff or the NY Times.

How did you meet Darci Wood?
For those who don't know already, Darci Wood is the LabMistress on LabMistress.com. You may have seen her comments on Slashdot, especially regarding stories on Kevin Mitnick.
My question:
Where and when did you two meet? How did you end up spending so much time together? -
TO MODERATORS
I usually don't post "MOD PARENT UP" comments, but this time I think that moderators really screwed up. I think that five out of six Darci Wood's comments in "Kevin Free" discussion with Score:1 and the sixth with Score:3 is simply an outrage, no more, no less.
These are the most interesting comments in this discussion and I've only read them by accident, after clicking "replies beneath your current threshold" link, while as I was browsing at +4 threshold. There are almost 500 comments in this story so far, with over 300 Score:1 comments. That way, if the most interesting comments are at Score:1, together with 300 other pieces of junk, no one will read them. But I guess I'm saying the obvious.
You may mod me down, I don't care, but you're making a big mistake by not modding Darci Wood's comments up in this discussion.

Re:Free Kevin first..
The problem with Kevin's story is that a lot of it is based on myth created by John Markoff and other reporters, and not fact. The statement that you made is completely false, and Kevin was never indicted nor convicted of stealing any credit cards. I refer you to a story on my site. Please pay particular attention to #3.

Kevin's $19,000 amateur radio license...
Story here. in it, Darci says:
"In totality, defending himself in the FCC case, cost Mitnick approximately $19,000, making his license the most expensive one in America. He is currently selling items on eBay to recover the costs incurred in this action. He is also still accepting donations to his FCC defense fund." -
Re:Kevin Mitnick's First Chapter
For a little more detail, my attempted submission from a few weeks ago is below. I just bought his book and the latest Hacking Exposed, now I'm just waiting for a friendly visit from the fed.
The first chapter of Kevin Mitnick's new book, The Art of Deception: Controlling the Human Element of Security, was removed by the publisher, but his girlfriend has now published it online. She gives credit to the Yahoo discussion group Kevin's Story for first posting the chapter. In the related Wired article, Mitnick claims that his girlfriend's blog is the first site he'll check out when his eight year federally mandated moratorium expires in January. The chapter covers Mitnicks initial forays into social engineering as well as alleging that John Markoff, stung by a failed book deal, used his position at the NYT to become rich by painting Mitnick as public enemy number one. -

Kevin Mitnick's First Chapter
Well, I've been trying to submit this as a story before but the slashdot editors rejected it. It's not about the same person, not the same "crimes", but somewhat related (feel free to mod me down!). Promise: An interesting and revealing read.
