Re:Complaints?
Oh.... useful sites exist. Like http://layerone.info/ for example.
:) Sweeping generalizations..... yep this is /. :) -
Just saw a lecture about military uses...... of VR at LayerOne last week by some guys from Systems Technology, Inc.. They demo'd their parachute training software, which they said George H W Bush used to prep for a birthday jump over his library a few years back. The graphics weren't what you'd expect of a modern FPS, but that wasn't their focus.
They also talked about other simulators they were working on for helicopter crew and other occupations which basically used blue-screen (magenta, in their case) technology to replace elements of video from cameras mounted on the front of the VR goggles.
One of the interesting points (I thought) was that they could use an aircraft down for maintenance as a training site so that the equipment your tax dollars paid for is always serving some use, even when its broke.

Re:I'm not convinced of VoIP yet...
Not "anyone" can eavesdrop a GSM phone or a DECT cordsless phone. Or VOIP over IPSec, for that matter.
Not true, GSM is very hackable (warning PowerPoint document). However, you do need to know the targets SIM id but once you clone that, you're basically homefree.
VOIP is totally insecure unless your either don't use the SIP protocol, or tunnel through IPSec or stunnel etc.. The obvious disadvantage of the latter is both sides need that tunnelling and in the real world that will rarely happen. -
On a similar tangent...
A whole bunch of us on the left coast [see: Los Angeles] have been working on getting our own convention off the ground. We're calling it LayerOne and it's a bit more for the Slashdot set then it is for the h4x0rs.
We're currently taking papers until March 14th from any interested parties who would like to speak on a broad range of topics. Anything from copyright issues to social software to VoIP is fair game.
