Re:Ring of Power: Cute....
Just a quick note - despite this limit to the in-client scripting language, there are still a number of easy ways to write bots. I mean, it's fairly trivial to write one using libSL and iron python. And it's only a matter of (too much?) time before someone hacks together a solution in perl and submits it to CPAN...

Yes, they do run Linux, want a LiveCD?Binaries are available for Windows 2000/XP, Mac OS X, and Linux i686, and the viewer is open source under the GPL with an exception so that Free/Libre Open Source Software can be incorporated without having to be under the GPL. If you want to try the open source version of the client, you can even get a Live CD version based on Knoppix.
Here's the requirements for the Linux client: Minimum requirements:
* Internet Connection: Cable or DSL
* Computer Processor: 800MHz Pentium III or Athlon, or better
* Computer Memory: 256MB or better (strongly recommend more!)
* Linux Operating System: A reasonably modern 32-bit Linux environment is required. If you are running a 64-bit Linux distribution then you will need its 32-bit compatibility environment installed.
* Video/Graphics Card:
o nVidia GeForce 2, GeForce 4mx, or better
o OR ATI Radeon 8500, 9250, or better
**NOTE**: Second Life absolutely requires you to have recent, correctly-configured OpenGL 3D drivers for your hardware - the graphics drivers that came with your operating system may not be good enough! See the TROUBLESHOOTING section if you encounter problems starting Second Life.
For a more comfortable experience, the RECOMMENDED hardware for the Second Life Linux client is very similar to that for Windows, as detailed at: .../sysreqs.php -
Re:FOSS details from TFA

"The libsecondlife and libsecondlife-java projects both provide the additional flexibility of having a BSD license,"
Your definition of 'not FOSS' is radically different from mine, then. BSD License is just about as open as you get. -
Re:An important moment in historysince when has "open source development" meant "making unauthorized copies"?
Generally those two things are unrelated. In this case, though, open source development is what is fueling the unauthorized copies. The copy bot in this case is built on the open source project libsecondlife, and the copy bot itself is open source and part of that project.

Re:Details
So LL said "if we catch you using Copybot we'll cancel your account" and you took that to mean "acceptance"?
By "aid/knowledge/acceptance" I meant that Linden Labs supported & worked with http://www.libsecondlife.org/ which is a site dedicated to 3rd party OSS programs.
The people running libsecondlife created CopyBot as a debug program, included it in their source repository and then showed it off.
CopyBot doesn't do anything that couldn't be done already, since the data is there. What's to stop anyone from stealing your texture, tweaking it enough so that it isn't an exact copy & then profiting?
The situation sucks for legit creators, but WTF would you expect in a digital world, where copying costs nothing? -
Details
TFA is seriously lacking in details, so I went to the google, which kicked up a few links to blogs http://sr.wordpress.com/tag/secondlife/
One & Two,
etc
Basically, this CopyBot program was created with the aid/knowledge/acceptance of the Linden Labs folks.
Here's some discussion straight from Linden Labs or you can read what the CopyBot creators have to say http://www.libsecondlife.org/
Summary: "if it's this easy, we should tell people that relying on the Second Life systems to protect content is not feasible any longer." -
Re:Where's GNU2ndLife?
libsecondlife (http://libsecondlife.org/), our reverse engineering of the SL protocol, is coming to maturity. Although I don't think Linden Labs would like us to work on server software though, we've been lucky to have their blessing so far...

Re:(Friend Spam) In Game Editor Augmentation
While we are talking about related projects, we (the libsecondlife project) are working on a C# importer and exporter for xml prim data. The
.prims format that prim.blender uses now has an XSD and primimport and primexport are both in early testing. A screenshot is up here. Sometime in the next couple months we hope to have a completely open design chain for Second Life where you can model and texture in any combination of Second Life, SketchUp, prim.blender, or whatever comes up.
