There's no reason to think the video is not real. I'm pretty sure it originally comes from the TC-Star european project (sorry, original web site is dead). Making it fit on a iPhone and work reasonably well with the comparatively puny CPU and disk space is an impressive feat though.

noooo, olivier.. this had nothing to do with TC-STAR... different engine (for smartphones), different data (S.American).. different interface, different handling.. it's for translingual two-way dialogs, TC-star was continuous parliament speeches (monologues).. jibbigo has to handle US/south american accents, TC-STAR is continental Spanish, etc., etc., etc.... So just because it involves the Spanish language, doesn't make it a ripoff..
Of course, it's no less real, however. Jibbigo is the product of a multi-year development effort at one of our latest ventures in cooperation with humanitarian organizations in need of language assistance. the video is real, straight unedited, the way it works. it is not perfect (nothing is) but it runs all on the phone, no client server magic behind the scenes, no conspiracies, no tricks, just hard science, design and engineering to help people communicate.. Enjoy..

The PhD student who was in my room one year ago (Cyril Rousseau) already worked on context adaptation of devices communication modalities.

The state of the art for arbitrary news broadcasts is about a 20% word error rate. While this isn't good enough for the poster's needs, it turns out to be almost good enough for indexing.

Wonder when we'll start seing Google return audio and video along with text documents? There's a research project demo of this happening here.

Just remember the golden rule unstructured 2 structured == convert 2 XML I wrote a [very bad] program in C++/Perl/tcsh IPC=pipes to add XML tags to English, and then index them into a search engine which would use the lingual data stored in the XML tags to help the search.

I don't want to be an XML-buzzword whore <Arnold Schwarzenegger accent> (XML commando eats Green berets, C++, Java, Perl, COBOL for breakfast)</Arnold Schwarzenegger accent> but you can't beat XML for easily converting anything that you can make sense out of into computer readable format. Real h3cKoRs use SGML, but us underlings have to stick with things we can understand like XML. As for expandability, if we want to encode something else into the document, then just tag-it-and-go

It took me 200 hours to fish out all these links (before the Google days), I don't want anyone to have to waste as much time as I did feeding the search engines exotic foods. It's a year old so pardon me for the odd broken link, armed with these you could probably turn jello into XML ;-)

This was my final year project thesis.
