Au Debian Conference
We're also hoping to run a small Debian Conference for the Asia-Pacific Debian developers and users. It'll be pretty informal; we're asking people who would like to talk about a subject to also email lca-cfp_AT_linux.org.au. See this for more information. It'll be on the Monday and Tuesday, with LCA 2002 starting on the Wednesday.

Re:Yay - about bloody time he was deposed!
No, the problem is that he is, as others have noted, extremely tedious to deal with.
He rarely responds to email and no every problem is with a .org.au -=> why do you think linux.conf.au has not been registered?
I put the initial request in during March. It is now August. You do the math. -
CodeRed2 Explorer for your viewing pleasureIt's a bit slap-dash, but here's CodeRed2 Explorer for your PHP-enabled web server. No need for Telnet, even: explore Windows-land a click at a time from the comfort of your browser. (-:
PLEASE MIRROR THIS and post your mirror URLs in reply to this message (subject Mirror of CodeRed2) since that server is a club server, low bandwidth, low budget. But very secure (Debian on Sparc and well maintained
:-)
SlashDot (the pikers )-: wouldn't let me post directly to this page.

Spot on.
Though it's fairly obvious Bill's not speaking up for the sake of the Australian IT industry, but out of his own self-interest (does he have any other kind of interest?) - his contribution to the discussion of governmental policy with respect to IT in this country is more important than practically any other factor, opinion or belief (possibly with the exception of the half-assed reactionary nonsense spouted by any "independant" members of parliament in marginal electorates that may feel like getting involved).
Every point that decefette makes in the previous post is correct, but is merely scratching the surface of the depths of ignorance and ambivilence this, and previous Australian governments have displayed to any local commercial pursuit not undertandable in terms of livestock or pop singers (is that a redundancy?).
Naturally Bill's only concern is that the government immediately redress the imbalance in their priorities by locking the entire nation into Microsoft Office 2001, HAL Edition (or whatever) but he has the only voice that the government knows that the electorate will recognise, and therefore should be supported by us in this cause - even by those of us lucky enough to be working in Australia for European-owned Linux-friendly corporations like myself - especially by us. Otherwise Austraila loses (our taxes, knowledge, and potential) when we go off and work in Ireland, Finland, Sweden, the US or England, and we lose when we don't get to live in Australia
:)Peace

If you can't get down to Melbourne..Check out the Universal Machine exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum. They've got lots of cool stuff on display, like a specimen piece from Babbage's Difference Engine, an analogue synthesiser, an Enigma cipher machine, and a robot cow.
BTW, where was CSIRAC when I was in Melbourne for CALU?

Where Linux Employers PostSince I am an employer seeking Linux staff, I thought I'd provide my input. I agree with much of the advise in the article.
However, at the end they recomend four job portals: Linux.com, Linux Today, User Friendly's GeekFinder and Linux.org.au. I agree with the first two, and (since I'm in North America) have no valid opinion on Linux.org.au.
The problem with Geek Finder is that it is really just a front for Dice.com. Unlike all the other resources mentioned, dice.com charges employers for listings, instead of being community-based and advertiser-supported.
Instead, I would recomend the following additional job portals, where I have actually posted jobs:
- Superexpert.com: not great, but it does host linux jobs.
- JustLinux: a smaller Linux portal, with a nice jobs page.
- Free Software Jobs Page: This is the GNU jobs page. It is strictly for free software jobs, so only hard-core open source jobs get posted there.
