feh, keybindings, and setfattr
With feh, you can run a specific command for any keypress (actually 0-9) while viewing the image. Using this command, associate file metadata using setfattr. If you need user input, open a dialog box from this command which in turn will be stored as metadata. Advantages:
1. No dependency on any new-fangled databases.
2. Metadata is independent of image codec/container/technology etc. Supports most popular formats - png, jpg, gif etc. -
Re:A bit of trivia...I've tried using mutt, but there seems to be a big learning curve before a mere mortal can use it. Nice keybindings help; 98% of my use in mutt is just left/right/up/down -- far left is the mailbox list, right enters a mailbox, right enters a mail, right lists the attachments, right views an attachment. r/g for reply, m to write a new message. l ~s foo to search (limit) by subject, l ~f to search by from, etc.
bind pager <up> previous-line
Granted, getting it all working/looking as you like it can take a while, but a decent example config got me going pretty quickly, and it's served me well for many years. The last I heard about Pine was it finally getting thread support; makes me wonder what else it must be missing. Maybe I'll take a look at Alpine, that was a while ago.
bind pager <down> next-line
bind pager <left> exit
bind pager <right> view-attachments
bind attach <left> exit
bind attach <right> view-attach
bind index <right> display-message
macro index <left> "<sync-mailbox><change-folder>?<toggle-mailboxes>"
bind browser <right> select-entry
bind browser <left> exit -
Re:People actually use Nautilus?
Ok. If you want something specifically for managing photos then wouldn't it make sense to use something designed for that task. Of course a simple CLI isn't going to help when you need to view images as you manage them, so use something like GQview[1] or (my personal favourite) feh[2].
The right tool for the job.

camE
My vote goes for camE - command line only, but it comes with some pre-canned config files that make it easy to set up. It can do timestamps, pretty antialiased/alpha-blended text, keep an archived copy of each image - and it talks scp as well as ftp for somewhat more secure uploading.
For hardware, I've had good luck with the Philips/pwc cameras (there was a time when they were only supported by a binary module, but the free replacement now works well enough for webcam use). -
Re:Example of two factor authentication
It's not too uncommon to see things like the RSA SecurID fob in the DC area - it's just a pseudo-random number generator, that has a counterpart on the server's side (software with the same algorithm and the same seed to start with). Every couple hundred of seconds it cycles to the next number on it's list, so when you log in, you type in your password, and the number on your fob, which then has to match the server's number.

Re:IrfanView
Have you tried Feh. It's extremely simple to use with it's rightclick-menu. And it doesn't have any toolbar wasting screen-estate, which annoys me personally in many imageviewers.

Re:Interesting
After writing the parent post, I decided to see how bad the effects of the image were. Not only did the image viewer (feh) lock up, so did X, and I was unable to do ctrl-alt-f1 (although I was able to move my mouse cursor). My remedy involved logging in via my Sony Clie and killing X (the KILL signal was required). This worked, but my virtual consoles were left in an unusable state, with 1 and 2 pixel wide vertical stripes of white, separated by 1 pixel wide stripes of black.

Re:Pretty much totally OT
let me scroll through my images without loading a "playlist" first.
I present you with feh. I'm nearing the end of the process of finding Linux equivalents of all the Windows programs I used to use regularly. I was mourning the loss of Irfanview as my image view until I found feh. It's 95% as good as Irfanview[1], which makes it a damn sight better than other open source offerings.
Feh is used from the command line. If you had a folder (for this example "img004") that had some images in it, you'd type "feh img004/*" to open the viewer. The "v" key toggles full screen, and spacebar/backspace traverse the folder images. It can do some other really neat stuff, too.
[1] Irfanview is far and away the best image viewer for Windows. Feh can't open tiff images and it doesn't have some of the configurability that Irfanview has (which isn't suprising, as Irfanview is very configurable). -
Re:Stay calm, this is a thread hijack. X11 on OS X
feh
gtk-gnutella
lopster
dc_gui w/ dctc
mtr
gkrellm (Not sure how well this would work...do OS X systems have a compatible /proc?)

Bye bye muttAfter seeing pine getting threading support, I thought it is now high time to switch back to pine. Yes. I can be influenced easily. I can admit it. I made a mistake by following other people's advice. I was swept away by the trend which was mutt, fetchmail and procmail configurations pimped by many a geek. I tell you why the configuration sucks.
- it is difficult to setup
- fetchmail SUCKS at IMAP and mutt SUCKS even more at it. IMAP is the way to check my inbox
- SCREW list traffic. It sucks. It really sucks when you use mutt and IMAP alone. Pine does a much better job of this with its own inbuilt filters. However, I admit, I am using slrn and newsgroups more...

I love Microsoft
They're my buddies. Sometimes I chill with ol' Billy and drinking tea and eating crumpets. Last time I was there he said something about giblet being a loser.
