Re:The place to start
I had a quick browse of the web (cos I was sure that there was at least _some_ educational software for linux somewhere) and found this site
I don't know the quality or status of most of the software - the only program that I have tried in the past was tuxtype, which is quite fun for five minutes (I'm guessing young children getting to grips with learning the layout of a QWERTY keyboard might get more out of it though :-)) -
A fantastic educational site for kidsI believe the perfect place to start would be LinuxforKids.com. You'll find links to Open Source educational software and Linux distributions like Debian Jr. that are designed with children in mind.

Favorites...My nieces are in that age range, and they love certian games and could care less about others. Check with LinuxForKids to get started.
There are quite a few sticker programs, a new 'paper doll' program (check Freshmeat.net), and some simple games that would work well. Favorites are Potato Guy in KDE 2.x, and a few of the puzzle games in Gnome.
Any Java program should work as well, such as KidPad.
Since you're talking 486s, you might want to look at a
/. article a couple weeks ago on using 486s and other low-powered machines as X stations, with one beefier machine running the applications.Wine or a DOS emulator can be used in a pinch, though for this age range it's not necessary.

Linux in education links
Check out SEUL/edu, where `SEUL' is ``Simple End-User Linux''. They offer a page to search Freshmeat for educational SW.
Then there's Linux for Kids, which is collecting both educational software and just plain games.
If you want a wider perspective, K--12 Linux is working to coordinate educational use of Linux in all primary and secondary schools.
Go for it! And don't forget to pass it on, and to return the favor to these sites.

Re:We also need children's and educational games
Check out LinuxForKids.com. It lists educational and games software for children for Linux.

Maybe under WINE?
The Fisher-Price site says the program runs under Windows 3.1 (and up), so perhaps it works alright under WINE?
I'd love to see more of the popular kids' educational/entertainment titles for Linux. My daughter has been playing with this stuff on the Mac since she was three, but most of the machines in the house run Linux (x86 mostly). I really should try running some of her stuff (many of the CDs have both Mac & Windows version on them) under WINE.
Meanwhile, interested parents (uncles, aunts) might check out LinuxForKids and Childrens Linux Titles for more. (I haven't checked out these sites very thoroughly, they seem to be fairly new).
