Re:Spyware
GATOR
... you can use Lavasoft's Ad-Aware to detect and delete it. Check your Add/Remove Programs for Gator, then see if you can find it in your Programs Folder. If you run the Gator program it will tell you what other program installed it in the first-place.

Ad-aware
Ad-aware is a Windows program from Lavasoft that will remove spyware from your computer. It is freeware. There is also a plus version available for a fee that will run in the background and prevent spyware from being installed.

Just when I was getting too smugI was reading this story this morning and was feeling a bit full of myself, you know, being too smart to ever do something as retarded as downloading a program from an untrusted source. It had happened to me before while searching astalavista for cracks, and I had consistently resisted clicking "yes".
This feeling lasted until a few minutes ago when I downloaded what I thought was a nice piece of warez from the gnutella network. I had plenty of warning that it wasn't what I was looking for. First of all it was only about 160 KB, but to distract me from that obvious fault it had the words "full-downloader" in the title, implying that you just run the program and it connects to a magical server to get your warez. Still, stupid me plodded along, knuckles dragging on the floor, drool hanging from my lips, and spouting something about an "axis of evil." I installed the program.
The final clue to pass through my thick skull was when I launched it and it started running a casino program, attempting to connect to something. Panic set it. Virus scan was run. Nothing. Whew. Adaware was run to check for spyware. Nothing. Google search. Nothing. Usenet search: a two month old post from France. Apparently the program tries to call a sex line or something in Germany (at least if you're in France). It even asks you what country you're connecting from!
Moral of the story: it can happen to anyone; we all have moments of stupidity.
Moral 2: Stop pirating warez.

Nasty performance hit
I saw this on a co-workers computer yesterday. IE (and the rest of his system) were virtually unresponsive - especially when it came to network operations. Turns out he had just installed Morpheus on it. Grabbed a copy of Ad-aware, ran it, and all his problems went away. Nasty stuff though...

Re:My favorite part of the article? The popunder for the "World's Largest Casino." (NOT)
If by (NOT), you mean the popunder did not happen, then disregard this post. Otherwise... I tried loading the msnbc page several times from various boxes and could not get a popunder to appear.
Are you sure you don't have something installed inadvertently that creates these popunders? If you haven't already, give something like AdAware a try to see just what is lurking about.
If you are absolutely sure that you are getting popunders from msnbc, then why the hell am I not getting them! I hate feeling left-out.
