    Ah, but is everyone only buying toys at that time because that's when they're released?

    Not just video games but also gadgets, I noticed a huge upsurge in available cool stuff in the lead up to xmas. I would have bought what I bought at any time of the year.

    If companies really are going to just head for Nov/Dec releases, they should tell us and we can all just close our gadget weblogs for the other ten months.

    Looks like all you iPod people may still have hope!
    I never knew that hope was required. Aren't there a bunch of options available to replace the battery? Sorry if I don't feel outraged about the cost of the iPod battery, I just received a quote to replace the battery on my Sharp Actius 150 Ultralight at A$500. Fortunately I bought an external pack with the machine so it doesn't matter that the internal one's capacity is down from 90 minutes to 30. (The same trick can be done with the iPod.)

    For up, I have a review of a very nice USB flash RAM device here. It's particularly good because it doesn't have any extra features that require drivers in, say, Windows XP. I have not booted off of it though.

    I have booted off my USB2.0/Firewire Asus (SCB-1608-D) DVD-ROM/CDr/CD-RW drive though. It's a very nice drive and I recommend it highly and often. The Asus drive I've even gotten to mount under PS2 Linux and it comes with a handy little carry bag.

    seriously though, i remember seeing a webpage about a guy using his gameboy as a webcam (the aforementioned website, http://www.lunacy8m.com/, does this as well) and he also had colour photos taken with 3 filters. That was at least a few months ago and definitely before October 2001, so it would have been the first. can't seem to find the site anymore, though.

    I visit those two logs regularly. I'm always/still on the lookout for interesting stuff, but it's getting fewer and further between -- and it's all becoming shockwave animations, rather than interesting hardware projects.

    And what's happened to the /. quickies -- they used to be good for the odd odd thing.
