Re:Flying Cars When Hell Is Frozen
You could always buy a jet pack instead... Coming real soon now...

Re:Ridiculous...
These are neither water pressure jet packs, nor peroxide jet packs. They look like turbojet jet packs. They claim to have a running time of 30 minutes, and can lift 250 pounds. So you could use them to rescue lighter people, and.......maybe give parachutes to heavier people?

Re:Not a jet pack
Sorry for replying to myself twice. But It was listed under the Engine section. It's a 200 HP 2 liter 2 stroke. and weighs 132 pounds. That would be one hell of a fun engine to have in a 1000 lb sports car. Or one for each wheel at that size. Except it needs to be overhauled every 100 hours of use. Probably less than that for ground use though.

Re:Not a jet pack
I just looked at the "technical specifications" on their website. Near the bottom it lists the fuel and oil as gasoline and 2 stroke oil. It doesn't state the engine is actually a 2 stroke. But it most likely is.

An Ozzie attempt to cash in on Kiwi success?
It seems like the Hoverbike seems to be a lame attempt to cash in on the success of the Martin Jetpack.
To me, the Hoverbike looks like a deathtrap: the pilot is sitting above the lift propellers and with a centre of gravity higher than the centre of lift and no apparent method for lateral stabilization it will tip over the moment the pilot leans to far to one side. In their FAQ, they attempt to brush off the stability issue by talking about fixed-wing aircraft: aircraft that don't hover and that have a large tailplane for lateral stability. Also, saying that the aircraft is safer because the pilot can leap off and use their own parachute just seems wrong to me. -
Re:FINALLY!!
This seems as good a place as any to link to the Martin Jetpack site and the technical specs.
Designed to conform to FAA Part 103 ultralight regulations (max 5gal fuel, 63mph) but could easily do more
Empty Wt. 250lbs + safety equipment
Useful load: 280+ lbs
Gross Wt. 535+ lbs.
600+ lbs. thrust
10 US gal/hr ; 30 min flight max, 31 mile range (at FAA speed limit)
V4 2L 2-stroke - 200hp, 132lbs, 180+ ft.-lbs.torque 3500-6000rpm
Airframe, fans- mostly carbon/epoxy with some aramid over honeycomb and foam cores, some aluminum fittings and special resins - ~75lbs.
includes roll cage and , high design safety factors, e.g. 5-10 for the fans.
Ballistic parachute,
minimal "avoidance curve" - attempts to ensure accident would be survivable at any altitudeFor moderate weight pilots (less than 180lbs.) willing to dispense with FAA part 103 compliance, the craft could carry up to 15 gal. / 90 min.
Target price: $100,000 -

Look up for Martin Jet Pack!

Short Ranged
It only has a 30 mile range and gets just 0.5 hours of flight time with its 5 gallons of fuel. Not exactly the best commute vehicle. Source: http://www.martinjetpack.com/technical-information.aspx

Re:The causes of post-2k depression:
Strike one off your list of letdowns: The Martin Jetpack is almost ready to market, and a novice can learn to fly it in no time:

More of a stunt than an achievement.
But getting there slowly right? We will have our jetpacks one day! The rocket pack used reportedly has a 45 second flight time, the gorge crossing took 20 seconds.
Its not a jet pack exactly but the Martin Jetpack is one you will be able to buy, and has a flight time in the range of hours... and runs on gasoline.

I'll park it next to my Moller flying car. This technology should be available be available in the late 90's, right after the manned mars missions.
