    If you want to read more about Menwith Hill (the UK site for Echelon) try http://www.menwithhill.com.

    It's a site produced by British political comedian Mark Thomas, who presents a "humourous political documentary" program on UK tv.

    I don't know for sure if there is anything suspicious at Menwith Hill, but I do know that the maps for where it is show nothing but empty fields, so someone certainly feels that there is something to hide.

    Some of you may have seen this before but it's worth repeating - Mark Thomas has set up a company that runs balloon flights over the Menwith Hill NSA facility in Yorkshire, England. The balloons are equipped with parabolic microphones and binoculars so that you can spy on the spies. Check here.

    BTW, do any Brits think it is a gross breach of sovereignty to have foreign bases in the UK? I mean, how would Americans feel if foreigners set up a military base here? Maybe there are foreign bases in the US and it's just a NATO thing...

    On a related note, have a look at this site, set up by Mark Thomas (and chums), who does a show on Channel 4, coincidentally.



    It's about Menwith Hill, the US spy-base in the UK that supposedly taps communications all over Europe.

    The largest spy station in the world (run by the NSA as part of the UKUSA agreement) is at Menwith Hill in North Yorkshire - some enterprising bods have set up balloon tours over it - the balloons are fully equipped with directional mics, video cameras etc, check out here here.

    I think the real thing that pisses people off with the UKUSA agreement is that it is used by governments to spy on their own poeple. For example, in the UK it is illegal for the authorities to monitor communicatios without direct permission of the Home Secretary. So they get the US NSA to do it for them. Similarly in the US, the NSA cannot legally monitor domestic communications between American organisations - so they get a bunch of British GCHQ spooks based in Fort Meade, MD to do their dirty work for them.

    Basically, having foreign military on your sovereign territory sucks and is open to abuse. I have no idea why Europeans (and North Americans) have stood for it for so long.
