Re:WTF
Million Man LAN is in Louisville, KY. Its the summer event hosted by the same people as LanWar. Every 3 months they have a 500 person event, and once a year they do 1300 (more this year!) people.

Re:Kim Stanley Robinson got it an bit wrong
Just host a million man LAN party at each pole and force everyone to use unshielded computer monitors, the magnetic field from all the electron beam deflector coils just might do it.

MIchigan Tech's strategy
At my school (Michigan Tech), i remember receiving several emails stating that student's internet access would be disabled if they were infected with $latest_worm. The IT department typically caught the worms as the first few machines were infected, and killed their network connection. The network performance never suffered as far as i could tell.
At the other end of the spectrum, some friends of mine at other schools were unable to use any network related stuff because their IT departments completely ignored the worm problem. I'm not sure if this was because of incompetence, indifference, or a little of both.
Funny anecdote, I'm sitting here at Million Man LAN. Someone brought in a machine infected with sasser, and within minutes there were hundreds of people infected. You'd think that the gamer crowd would be up to date with their patches. -
Soap opera, or Hardware review site?
Fortunately, the friendly folks at Hardocp have stepped in to provide some legal assistance for the guy, to make sure he is not railroaded into pulling down his editorial describing THG's media shenanigans.
More bullshit drama from HardOCP. Last week, it was accusations about Futuremark. This week it's about some supposed media blackout, and accusations that THG might be suing some other website. I mean, come on. Read THG's news page. ABC News and WHAS 840 radio even did a broadcast from the event. Does this sound like a "media blackout" to you?
"as you can see from the coverage on www.sudhian.com, any other press that came along was treated respectfully and was not hindered in any way. You can also visit the organizers at www.lanwar.com, and you will see clearly that there was no media blackout. In fact, I personally recommeded to the organizers that they get as much as press as they could. Local press such as WHAS 11 TV was there."
And what business is any of this of HardOCP? At what point did Hard|OCP stop being a hardware site, and start being a fucking soap opera? I've seen twelve year old girls that are less into gossip and rumors. -
Re:I'll probably be downmodded into oblivion, but
Tom's Hardware got it right. I was referring to the website of the LAN itself which _does_ use the term "largest lanparty[sic] in the world".
Btw, of course you don't have mod points, you're an AC. Though I bet you have a real /. account too and is posting as AC to avoid the downvotes and the resulting loss of karma. Coward, indeed. -
I'll probably be downmodded into oblivion, but ...
Firstly, this must be one of the most poorly written
/. "news" items in the history of the website. "Tom's Hardware has an overview about one of the biggest Lan Parties". That sorry excuse for a sentence alone makes me sick.
Second, with LANs like DreamHack attracting I believe around 5000 visitors each year (actually twice each year, since there's both DH Summer and DH Winter nowadays), a LAN of merely a thousand peeps hardly qualifies as "one of the biggest" IMO. Reading the official website they seem to really think they're the largest LAN party in the world, judging from the "about" page. A bit US-centric are we? Morons.
I won't even go into how the whole thing seems more like a giant marketing gig (the people attending are basically paying $30/day to be fed advertisments from AMD, ASUS et al) than a LAN party. -
Re:I have an idea...
It's been done...sort of. The Million Man Lan that happened a couple of years ago had a gathering in Louisville, KY for the easterners and a gathering somewhere in California for the Westerners. The two gatherings were supposed to be connected by a T-3 connection. But the West coast contingent failed due to not enough registrations. Too Bad. We had a blast for 4 days with out them.

Re:whens the NA one coming?
Million Man Lan 2 is coming up June 26 - June 29. Got room for a couple thousand I believe.
-
That's not the largest. What about million man lan? 2500 people in Louisville, KY, and another 2500 in Los Angeles, CA.
-
Other gigantic lan parties across North America.
The first event that pops into my mind as quite possibly the biggest lan party in North America is the Million Man Lan. It spans two cities with 2500 people housed in each city.
5000 > 1200.

What is the cost?
I couldn't find the cost listed on the site. It may be under registration but that requires a member account.

Hunh? 30-90 pings
From What kind of a ping can I expect?
Our stats show us that the pings on the main floor average between 30-90 pings.
Do they mean 30-90 ms? -
The best reason to go: Good pings for everyone
Hmm... Nice pings for you AND all your teammates, that's worth it in and of itself. Play any games you bring, although the big tourneys only feature 3 games, decided by vote.
(Flamebait, but try to take it in the spirit intended, please:)
Why did it have to be millionMANlan, instead of millionPERSONLAN? -
