ReplayTV To Track Viewing Habits
drwiii writes: "This article over at CNN talks about a deal between Nielsen and ReplayTV to develop technology to track time-shifted viewing habits. The ReplayTV unit doesn't have software to track viewing choices, but it looks like it'll be getting it now. The article also touches on Nielsen's relations with TiVo and Microsoft (WebTV)." Fantastic. Now I'll expect junk mail every time I linger a little too long over Buffy . I think that if these machines are going to be used for market research, the networks should pay the bill, and they should be free to everyone. -
Preliminary Injunction Issued in DVD CCA Case
jlj writes "Judge Elfving has just issued the preliminary injunction. We're having the opinion faxed over now and we'll have it up on www.opendvd.org ASAP. This has truly been a sad week... but we will keep fighting!" In the word of EFF Attorney Robin Gross, "We're going to need some bigger guns." The judge's official opinion can be found here. This story will be updated as we get information. -

NSI Modifies "whois" Agreement
drwiii writes "Our good friends at NSI have modified their WHOIS agreement yet again, and it now seems to forbid any repackaging of the results returned from the query, even if your interest is not commercial. Also, notice how the agreement now appears before any results are returned. " I noticed it says "significant portion", but it also never really defines it, either... -

Mindcraft Posts Linux Hate Mail
drwiii wrote in to tell us that Mindcraft has posted a few choice responses by Linux zealots. Quite offensive- don't read it you're pure of heart. <SERMON> I get CC'd on this stuff a lot so I knoW that these are not only real, but they are only scratching the surface of the crap that lands in the INBOX of anyone on the Internet who breaths anything that isn't glowing about Linux. And I'm embarassed by it. Please remember that how you say something is often more important than what you say. But in messages like these, what you said was childish and offensive, and you make us all look like raving loonies. This doesn't hurt Microsoft or help advance Linux-- in fact it does quite the opposite. Please Please Please read the Linux Advocacy HOWTO. Bad advocacy killed OS/2, The Amiga, and still threatens the Mac- don't let this happen to Linux. </SERMON> -
NSI challenged over "obscene" domains
drwiii writes "news.com has a news tidbit about NSI going to court because of their refusal to register domain names that they feel are "obscene". " What's amusing to me is the steady flow of words that I hear about that are rejected, considering the relative naughtiness of many existing domains. -
Couple of Dorks in Wired
drwiii was the first to submit it and I guess I have to post it. Hemos and I have our pictures in the March issue of Wired (p45). We look like dorks, but when they took that picture it was like 5 degrees out and had something like a 25 degree wind chill. This is for the March issue they say as they order us to remove our coats and risk frostbyte so that we look timely. Eek. I guess this means I should buy this issue. Update: 02/15 10:34 by CT : I'm the ugly on. The ugly one on the right. The metal thing is a lighthouse. -
