Re:An anecdote
Hardware is definitely at issue -- Linux rocked with APM, and I was able to do things like sleep in the middle of kernel compilation and resume without missing a beat, on a Sony Vaio 505R or HP Omnibook 900. On these same three IBM laptops, XP needs ethernet drivers sneakernetted in, and can't install at all on the T60 without building an nLite disk or dropping the SATA drives into AHCI mode. But, once installed, XP's power management and sleep is nearly flawless on all three systems. It gets "nearly" because after a week or two of frequent suspend/resume it will eventually fail to suspend or get stuck in low-power CPU mode. A reboot fixes it.

Re:Stupid New Cars
There's a good reason for the attitude -- as the things we buy get more complex, we the consumers are no longer really the customers. Rather than copy and paste my ranting, I'll just link it: http://www.monkeynoodle.org/comp/race

Re:Automated Spam Response
Either way has anyone noticed that this list seems to have changed over the years. I swear it has, I'll have to go find some achieves of old versions.
It hasn't changed at all. My original post from Dec. 2003 has the same list of items, or at least I don't see any here that I didn't write originally.
Now I have seen variants of this list around the web, adapted to things other than spam. I've also stumbled across it in online CS course materials and antispam research papers, as comic relief I guess. -
Re:Selection?
read through the projects section on mini-itx, there's some great cases, and the best ideas get picked up and made into products. Hush PC makes some nice ones, for instance.
One of the nice things about mini-itx is that its cheap enough that you can rethink decisions. For instance, I spent around $360 on this project ( http://www.monkeynoodle.org/comp/chihiro), $30 of which was the case and shipping for the case. It's okay, but I'm thinking about a better case setup already. If and when I move it into a better case, I'll be out $30, not the hundred or so that a full-tower case costs, and I'll have a few dinky scraps of plexiglass to dispose of, not a massive metal box.
If the dang things had decent Linux video support, I'd buy a ton more of them. As soon as the XFree86 project has the drivers stabilized, look for VIA's stock price to jump

Re:Some info
Is it just me, or is Slashdot really annoying to use with all the lameness filters and slow-down-cowboy filters and such?? I mean, I still read it for news, but posting is a pain and so I rarely do. Tonight is no exception.
So, I screwed up the URL above -- it should be http://www.monkeynoodle.org/lrp/LRP-Load-Balancin

Some info
I've put up some tips and things to look for here. In short, you might be better off setting up two routers. TEQL might help with 1 router, haven't gotten it going yet. HTH,
