Re:How come they never test Comodo?
Don't forget the open source Clamwin antivirus program.
Should be a better fit as I believe it uses the windows idea of how an anti-virus program should work (scan on read.)

Try Moon Secure
http://www.moonsecure.com/
Open source, uses the ClamAV database. Vista/7 support pending. -
Re:ClamWin
Moonsecure is an AV based on clamwin: it actually employs a real-time scanner. clamwin offers no active protection, so it is pretty much useless for most user scenarios.
In all honesty, I've given both Moonsecure and clamwin many chances over the past couple of years. I don't want to admit it, but I feel as though I've been largely disappointed with the detection rates, the interface and the speed of both AVs. I've used them mostly in a 'workbench' setting though, scanning client drives outside of the system. In comparison to the other (commercial) scanners I use regularly, I've not been impressed. -
Re:Decent free stuff already available
> If you can't be bothered with onaccess scanning, try clamwin. Its very good for checking suspicious files.
If you do want clamwin, and you also want on-access scanning, then try Moon Secure Antivirus.
"Moon Secure AV is an opensource antivirus currently using the clamav engine
... Unlike clam it has an enterprise level real-time scanner. It is built for windows and runs on XP and vista. It can scan portable drives and fixed drives. It is able to detect viruses, Trojans and spyware."Not many people know about that one, it would seem.

Re:It's sad...
> If only there were more opensource coders who used Windows primarily, there'd probably be an anti-virus along the lines of Filezilla, Firefox, Openoffice, and so on...
There is at least one open source anti-virus for Windows.
Apart from free virus database updates, Moon Secure ant-virus isn't much different form the others though, since it will still allow you to delete a file which is critical bit of Windows if a virus has managed to attach itself to that system file.
Windows and the very concept of anti-virus is inane anyway
... fancy trying to fix an attack on your system by detecting a problem only AFTER it has compromised your system. Talk about an exercise in wishful thinking ... -
Re:No more....
Would you consider using ZoneAlarm for your software firewall (or get a "hasbro" level appliance for home if you don't have one and don't bother with a software firewall if the PC isn't mobile), and then a F/OSS AntiVirus package that does AntiVirus and ONLY antivirus? If so, then check out Moon Secure AntiVirus. I run it on my Vista installation (which exists for gaming).
On Linux, I don't worry about it. In fact, I submit bug reports to malware authors complaining that their crapware doesn't run on WINE and I feel left out. OH WOE IS ME!

Moon Secure AV (FOSS)
This is what I'm switching to:

Re:Grisoft dropped the ball with AVG v8.0
One of the other slashdotters posted a message about using MoonSecure, which is a free OSS antivirus. Previous to looking into the software, I was going to say how much I liked ClamAV... then I realized MoonSecure uses Clam. Plus it provides the non-clunky interface, including right-click options, that ClamAV lacks.
If it turns out to be as nice as I'm hoping, I'll be installing that on my wife's computer tonight and removing AVG. If it works well, and her computer starts running as fast as it used to (pre-AVG), I'm going to be installing it on all the PCs that I support. Yay, open source! -
Nagware alert!
avast! antivirus Home Edition is FREE to use but it is necessary to register before the end of the initial 60 day trial period. To register, click here. Following registration you will receive by E-mail a license key valid for a period of 1 year. After you have downloaded and installed the program, the license key must be inserted into it within 60 days. The registration process is very easy, and it will take you only a couple of minutes.
Also Avira has been getting more and more annoying over the years, it's practically adware now.
So now it looks like it's either AVG with the browser plugins removed or MoonAV (which is FOSS):
(It used to have a problem where you'd need to remove the Windows service manually after uninstalling, they might have fixed it though.)

Re:AgreedMoon Secure AV works pretty well... it's open source (hosted by sourceforge). Looks interesting. Just tried to install Moon version 2.2.2.162 on Win2k and got a few missing
.dll errors on install; I guess I'll try the stable version later. -

Re:Boycott all commercial antivirus programs?
http://www.moonsecure.com/ is what I recommend to people, it has on execute and uses clamav but you can plug the anti-virus engine of your choice in.

Re:Obviously they are worried
And even if Linux had a virus problem, there would be open source anti-virus application to defend people against viruses.
Even now when Linux does not have a virus problem, there is already an open source anti-virus application to defend people against viruses.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clamav
In fact, come to mention it, there is a relatively new opensource antivirus program for Windows (using clamav as a base) that is a direct competitor for McAfee that not many people yet know about.

"Open-source" does not necessarily imply "Linux". -
