As with many things, there is a FOSS solution, http://www.mozdex.com/

Re:Already-existing grassroots google
But Majestic 12 sucks. Mozdex, on the other hand, which is buiilt on open source technology. It's not the best search engine out there, but it's about a billion times better than Majestic 12.

Re:Use Mozdex.com
Some of your results seem a bit redundant

Use Mozdex.com
Sure, it's not really (nearly) large as google, but we're growing. Yes, i'm the founder/operator and the one looking to spread the name.
Wer don't track your IP's, we don't identify your sessions, we don't flood you with toolbars, we don't inject our apps into everything and we don't aim to be anything but a good search platform built on open source and open ideas.
Give us a whirl.. feedback is always appreciated.
You have a choice.. i'd love your support but as long as people choose google no one will be able to replace it and your data/ethics/privacy concerns will be history and what google does will be status-quo

Re:Why should Google help the CCP?
Google is dead.
Try Mozdex. It's clean, free to use, and is based on free software. -
Re:Google was good, going down?
Who knows, maybe someone else will start a search engine. Google came around at a time when Yahoo and Excite dominated, but Google made a product easier to use. I remember my first time using Google... I was at Yahoo to search for something when someone said "Why don't you try google, check it out". I was hooked.

A little pressure goes a long wayBeing the owner of Mozdex.com i was proud to find out that my name gets tossed around the Google campus and it appears some of the ideas of my project as well as the developers of the Nutch, Lucene and Egothore projects have been heard.
I'm not to sure what google would actually release, however it is interesting they're trying to back pedal on some of there policies and recent patents they had been filling
I don't wear a tinfoil hat, but i don't like the enormity and control google is pushing over the search engine world as well as the advertising/contextual marketing world. They have some of the most assinine Terms of Services and agreement policies i have ever seen. basically if you choose google you have to walk on pins and needles because you don't (nor never will) know how they operate and nor do you know if they will change something that will lead you to loosig all of your revenue or being banned, kicked or whatever they choose.

More explaining on "explain" would be usefulFirst, I've futzed around with MozDex for a little while, so congrats on having Slashdot "find" you and getting the word out.
What I have found REALLY interesting about MozDex is the "explain" button which I assume provides some insights into why MozDex decided to rank that web URL as whatever
... but the information as currently presented isn't understandable and/or explained. For instance, I was interested where a Google Compute web page came up and was actually quite surprised that a MozDex Search shows it as #1. So I click on the explain button and I get a page with a buncha numbers
... but nowhere on this page (or anywhere on the MozDex site) can I find an explanation for what they heck they mean.Since your claim-to-fame is open source/search, I think adding information on the internal algorithms would help you out. Keep up the good work - interesting stuff!
;-)alek
P.S. Minor typo in the Corporate Info link from your FAQ

Nutch
There is one open source search engine that seems to be up-and-coming. Nutch is now powering Mozdex, and it looks fairly impressive so far.
Now, instead of the previous free-will donations, you can support the project through purchasing very cheap sponsered listings that appear to the right of the results (similar to Google)

Re:OT: Where do we go once Google turns evil?
Probably here: mozDex.
"mozDex is a search engine that uses open source search technologies to create an open and fair index". -
The first non self promoting search engine
Well at least it is not self promoting....search for mozdex on Mozdex and you get not mozdex as the first hit

Re:Upcoming Open Source Alternative to Google...
I'm very intrigued to see how your Search Philosophy works out. I hope I can contribute in the near future.

Um...
Search results for time-honored keyword porn brought a paltry 10 hits. What do you expect me to do with that!!!?

Re:P2P?
look at mozdex

what timing for this /. article!
just as I'm pulling an all-nighter at this moment trying to embed a custom search engine into an app for use on an intranet.
Actually what is more interesting is Nutch and Mozdex, which seems to be based around Lucene (what I am using to build my own search engine embedded into a Horde framework app). Although probably a lot simpler than the industrial grade stuff, for someone who has been used to throwing a word at an input screen and magically getting back results, the insight into the inner workings of search engines is very interesting.
