AdBlock+ = Slower, Inferior & 'Souled-Out'
Can adblock do 16 things hosts do for speed, security, & reliability:
1.) Protect vs. malicious sites/servers (beyond malicious ads: See 2-10 next)
2.) Protect vs. fastflux botnets + stop communication to C&C servers
3.) Protect vs. dynamic dns botnets + stop communication to C&C servers
4.) Protect vs. DGA botnets + stop communication to C&C servers
5.) Protect vs. downed DNS (adds reliability)
6.) Protect vs. DNS redirect poisoned dns
7.) Protect vs. trackers
8.) Protect vs. spam
9.) Protect vs. phishing
10.) Protect vs. bandwidth caps
11.) Get you past a dnsbl
12.) Keep you off dns request logs
13.) Speed up websurfing by adblocks & hardcoded fav. sites
14.) Work on ANY webbound app (think stand-alone email programs) multiplatform.
15.) Give you easily texteditor controlled data for the above
16.) Do all that & block ads (better than addons) more efficiently in cpu cycles + memory usage* ANSWER ="NO" to each above on AdBlock doing it as well or at all!
APK
P.S.=> AdBlock does FAR less than hosts do & FAR less efficiently - hosts do MORE w/ less + Hosts start w/ the IP stack before REDUNDANT inefficient addons BEGIN to operate (as 1st resolver queried):
AdBlock's SLOWER than hosts: http://superuser.com/questions...
AdBlock's 4++gb & 100% CPU usage flooring inefficiency -> https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth... + ClarityRay defeats it + it 'souled-out' & is crippled by default paid off to not do its job http://techcrunch.com/2013/07/... & ABP too http://finance.yahoo.com/news/...
AdBlock adds complexity/room for breakdown/exploit + from a slower mode of operations (usermode = more messagepassing overheads vs. hosts in kernelmode).

Which 1 of these 5 = you?... apk
See subject: Dave420's 1 of 5 types failing @ "getting the best of me" - they can't, or they would've LONG ago):
1.) Advertisers
2.) malware makers &/or botnet herders
3.) webmasters (I held it back for them in fact, it was done, in 3 parts though in tty mode, as far back as 2003 here but when malvertizing went out of control, out the door she went to 'the masses' for the absolute good, since any idiot knows being destructive = easy, but doing good NEVER is, but it's worth it imo)
4.) An INFERIOR competitor (e.g. - AdBlock, Ghostery etc.)* Doesn't 'take a brain' to realize that - after all: THEY'RE THE ONES WHO GET "HURT" by it.
THEY have been hurting others bandwidth/speed, security, & more for DECADES!
They certainly CAN'T get the better of me by validly disproving my points on hosts files' mulitiple nigh ubiquitous value to end users...
Yes, that "Almost ALL Ads Blocked" payoff from Google goes a LONG WAYS to sockpuppeting trolls, now doesn't it?
Too bad it can't prove ME or truths/facts I use, wrong eh? Not.
Dave420 (hiding behind his 'registered luser' name, lol)?
His favorite color = transparent, since I see RIGHT thru him per the above... it's "ok for adblock sockpuppets" to do it? Yea, the payoff money from GOOGLE goes a LONG ways to that, now doesn't it? Yes sir, you're LIVING proof thereof.

P.S.=> I'd WAGER per #4 above Dave420 = Wladimir Palant (AdBlock creator) who wrote me by email, 1st, saying "hosts are a shitty solution" - well, when I confonted him in email reply to show me that "Almost ALL ADS BLOCKED" can do MORE than custom hosts? He RAN like a scared rabbit - ESPECIALLY after this study showed how massively INEFFICIENT in RAM (5gb usage) & HIGH CPU USAGE AdBlock is https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth...

Re:What's wrong with slashdot indentation?
I prefer the old formatting.
There's an extension for Firefox that I used to tweak the css back: Stylish https://addons.mozilla.org/en-...
I created this rule which made it better:
@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);
@-moz-document domain("slashdot.org") {
#comments ul ul, #comments ul li ul li {
margin: 0px 0px 0px -10px !important;
}

Would you prefer Firefox OS?
Do you think that Mozilla's Firefox OS would be a better OS for these in-car systems?
It's already the most open mobile OS around, because it's built on the best open standards around, like JavaScript, HTML and CSS.
It's also fast, because it's built upon Firefox technology, which is among the fastest there is.
The UI is also simple and sleek. Lots of seniors use Firefox and love it. If the UI works for them, then it will work for everyone.
Android may have more apps, but Firefox OS is top notch better in so many other ways.

Re:Why do this in the first place?
I'm less certain of this than I was a year ago. In mid 2014, I would confidently assert that Firefox matches Chrome everywhere, and Chrome's multiprocess advantage was irrelevant because Firefox was so stable it did not matter. But this spring, Firefox on Ubuntu has been awful for me. After it's been open for about a day, it starts to hang left and right, even with all add-ons disabled. I had to change my user preference to "When Firefox Starts: Show my windows and tabs from last time" and now I kill the browser manually when I can't stand the lag about twice a week. I've gone through all of the steps at https://support.mozilla.org/en... and my machine has 12GB of RAM, and aside from the fact that applying any suggested fix involves a full restart of Firefox (which solves the problem for about two days) nothing seems to work.
Maybe the situation is better on Windows, OS X, and Android. I certainly hope it's better on Firefox OS, since of course low and even mid range mobile devices don't have the same memory available as traditional laptops and desktops. I leave Chrome on my work machine, which also runs Ubuntu, open for months at a time. -

Test Infrastructure is hard
The code has been altered to suit a different vision, and they no longer even try to recompile new FF versions. Pale Moon is a complete break with Firefox
So while I work for Mozilla, I don't dislike Pale Moon in any way. Forking is a natural part of open source and it should be!
:)
I'm not going to discuss good/bad about forking we all know about innovation vs. fragmentation, etc... Instead I want to objectively highlight one of the things that makes forking hard: build/test infrastructure.
But as someone who works on Mozilla build/test automation infrastructure, I wonder how Pale Moon plans to keep the unit tests green. The infrastructure is very complicated with many platforms, tests and fragile performance tests. To give you an idea take a look at: https://treeherder.mozilla.org... it displays pushes, platforms builds and tests (even understanding it is non-trivial).
This is not to bash Pale Moon, or to claim that they can succeed. I'm merely trying to say that forking a complex project requires a huge support staff even with all automation scripts, configuration and source code licensed appropriately, duplication test infrastructure is very hard.
Given that their commit rate is lower Pale Moon probably doesn't need as much infrastructure, but keeping tests green will still be a huge effort.
This is IMO sad, it's not in the open source spirit to make things hard to fork. But I also know that we have efforts in progress to modernize our infrastructure and make it easier to redeploy (but it'll probably be a long time before this is easy). -

For anyone else wondering what the hell this is
I had to look this up. For anyone else wondering: this is one of those hidden FIrefox features which is only available to people who know about it ahead of time, through the about:config interface. If you're one of those people who isn't in the club, the boolean you search for is "privacy.trackingprotection.enabled".
[Insert rant about FIrefox's god-awful UI and severely lacking menu system.] -
Re:bye
Just install the Classic Theme Restorer addon which will fix everything and allow you to customise the UI to a much larger degree.
-
Re:bye
Or, you guys could simply install the "Classic Theme Restorer" browser extension for Firefox which will let you keep the previous UI and disable numerous new "features".
As for privacy-based ads on the start page, you can easily disable this by turning off the tiles, or going to config and disable altogether... or I'm sure Classic Theme Restorer will soon add this option too.
-
Re:bye
Configurability is slowly being removed. Remember how configurable the UI used to be before the Australis disaster hit?
When Australis hit, only one thing changed for me: the firefox icon turned into a triple bar "hamburger" icon () and stuck it on the right side. I still have vertically-stacked tabs (TreeStyleTab), the old menu bar (though I have it on a button to save vertical space), and if I want I can disable the hamburger with the "Personal Menu" addon and have the pre-australis firefox button and menu instead.
All they really did was make some cosmetic changes without removing the option of using addons to tweak it. The switch didn't even affect most of the UI addons I already had in use. Don't like it, change it, just like before.

Ghostery (Advertiser owned) - "Fox guards henhouse" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G...
Addons add complexity/room for breakdown/exploit + from a slower mode of operations (usermode = more messagepassing overheads vs. hosts in kernelmode).
