Can ghostery/adblock do 17 things hosts do for speed, security, & reliability:
1.) Protect vs. malicious sites/servers (beyond malicious ads: See 2-10 next)
2.) Protect vs. fastflux botnets + stop communication to C&C servers
3.) Protect vs. dynamic dns botnets + stop communication to C&C servers
4.) Protect vs. DGA botnets + stop communication to C&C servers
5.) Protect vs. downed DNS (adds reliability)
6.) Protect vs. DNS redirect poisoned dns
7.) Protect vs. DNS amplification attacks
8.) Protect vs. trackers
9.) Protect vs. spam
10.) Protect vs. phishing
11.) Protect vs. bandwidth caps
12.) Get you past a dnsbl
13.) Keep you off dns request logs
14.) Speed up websurfing by adblocks & hardcoded fav. sites
15.) Work on ANY webbound app (think stand-alone email programs) multiplatform.
16.) Give you easily texteditor controlled data for the above
17.) Do all that & block ads (better than addons) more efficiently in cpu cycles + memory usage* "?"

P.S.=> ANSWER ="NO" to each above on Ghostery/AdBlock doing it as well or at all:
BOTH do far less than hosts do & less efficiently - hosts by way of comparison, do MORE w/ less:
Ghostery's Advertiser owned - "A fox guards the henhouse"-> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G...
AdBlock's 4++gb & 100% CPU usage flooring inefficiency -> https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth... + ClarityRay defeats it + it 'souled-out' & is crippled by default paid off to not do its job http://techcrunch.com/2013/07/...
Both add complexity/room for breakdown/exploit + from a slower mode of operations (usermode = more messagepassing overheads vs. hosts in kernelmode).
Hosts start w/ the IP stack before REDUNDANT inefficient addons BEGIN to operate (as 1st resolver queried).

"Big Data" is not "bullshit".
The term "Big Data" is bullshit, but the concept itself is not. It's statistics, plain and simple. When you have sufficient data available, there is a lot of information and insight that can be obtained from these data.
A perfect example of this are the data that are available about Mozilla Firefox. Let's start by looking at Firefox's market share today. As we can see, it's only about 10% these days, on both the desktop and mobile platforms. Their mobile presence is particularly embarrassing, as it's much less than even mobile IE's! Even the ancient Android 2.3 browser has more users than Firefox for Android! Even more interesting is how Chrome for Android alone likely has more users than Firefox does in total!
Those browser stats are an example of "Big Data" that's tremendously useful. We can learn a lot about Firefox and its role in the modern world from that data alone. When you're dealing with data sets derived from absolutely massive collections of source data, remarkable observations are possible.
We can also look at Mozilla's own Firefox feedback results. These are very interesting! Over the past 7 days, over 10,000 people have submitted feedback. Across all of the Firefox-branded products, 87% of people report being "sad" with Firefox, while only 13% are "happy" with it! That's a huge gap, even when we consider that angry people are more likely to give feedback than happy people. There are 6.5 times more people who are sad with Firefox than there are people who are happy with it! We can correlate this feedback data set, which is statistically significant, with the results we derive from the browser market share data set. It becomes obvious that people are leaving Firefox behind because they are unhappy with it. Furthermore, Mozilla should already be aware of this displeasure with Firefox.
This is the beauty of statistics at work!
When we consider global data sets consisting of data from thousands or millions or even billions of people, we can see some stunning patterns and results. Clearly Mozilla needs to do a better job of listening to its users. Something is seriously wrong when 87% of them are unhappy with Firefox. The data are there, Mozilla! The results are obvious! Please, act on it! Listen to the users!

No astroturfing. Just disappointed users.
Do you have any actual evidence that this mysterious "someone" who is engaging in this alleged "astroturfing" actually exists?
I don't think there are any conspiracies here. The problems at hand are quite obvious: Mozilla repeatedly makes idiotic decisions that Firefox users hate, Mozilla refuses to listen to the Firefox users when they object to these bad decisions, and then Mozilla goes on to make more dumb decisions that Firefox users don't like.
Google, Apple, Microsoft and even Opera don't have to do a damn thing for people to be angry with what Mozilla has done. They don't have to pay anyone to "bash" Firefox. The legitimate Firefox users who have been screwed over by Mozilla time and time and time and time and time and time and time again are the ones angry with what's happening and are speaking out against it!
For example, I recently saw this screen shot posted by somebody else in some other discussion here about Firefox a few weeks ago. I've seen something similar happen with recent versions of Firefox on my Linux system. So when I hear people from Mozilla saying how Firefox's memory leaks have been fixed, or how its performance is improved, I remain very skeptical. My experience shows the opposite of what Mozilla and its supporters claim.
Of course, I know I'm not alone. All we need to do is look at Mozilla's own Firefox feedback results. Right now, 87% of the reports are "sad", while only a mere 13% are "happy". While not all users will be happy, obviously, that's a massive discrepancy between the number of happy users and the number of sad users.
Face it, Firefox users aren't happy with what Mozilla has done to Firefox over the past few years. Mozilla is fucking over a lot of Firefox users, and these users are vocally expressing their displeasure with Mozilla's stupidity. These people aren't being paid to express their displeasure. They're just really damn unhappy with how Mozilla has crapped all over them!

16 things hosts do for speed (#13 below), security, & reliability:
1.) Protect vs. malicious sites (beyond malicious ads: 2-10 next)
2.) Protect vs. fastflux botnets + stop communication to C&C servers
3.) Protect vs. dynamic dns botnets + stop communication C&C servers
4.) Protect vs. DGA botnets + stop communication to C&C servers
5.) Protect vs. downed DNS (adds reliability)
6.) Protect vs. DNS redirect poisoned dns
7.) Protect vs. DNS amplification attacks
8.) Protect vs. trackers
9.) Protect vs. spam
10.) Protect vs. phishing
11.) Get past a dnsbl you don't like
12.) Keep you off dns request logs
13.) Speed up websurfing by adblocks & hardcoded fav. sites
14.) Work on ANY webbound app (think stand-alone email programs) multiplatform.
15.) Give you easy texteditor controlled data for the above
16.) Do all that & block ads better than addons more efficiently in cpu cycles + memory usage?* Hosts help 4 speed + they help you stop hitting bandwidth caps too!

Best way to block ads

A.) Hosts do more than:
1.) AdBlock ("souled-out" 2 Google/Crippled by default http://techcrunch.com/2013/07/... )
2.) Ghostery (Advertiser owned) - "Fox guards henhouse" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G...
3.) Request Policy -> http://yro.slashdot.org/commen...B.) Hosts add reliability vs. downed/redirected dns (& overcome site redirects e.g.

D.) Hosts files yield more:
1.) Speed (adblock & hardcodes fav sites - faster than remote dns)
2.) Security (vs. malicious domains serving malcontent + block spam/phish & trackers)
3.) Reliability (vs. downed, Kaminsky redirected (99% ISP DNS' = unpatched vs. it), DGA, Fastflux, & dynDNS botnets)
4.) Anonymity (vs. dns request logs + dnsbl's).---
* Hosts do more w/ less (1 file) @ faster levels (ring 0) vs redundant inefficient addons (slowing slower ring 3 browsers) via filtering 4 the IP stack (coded in C, loads w/ os, & 1st net resolver queried w\ 45++ yrs.of optimization).
* Addons = more complex + slow browsers in messagepassing (use a few concurrently & see) & are nullified by native browser methods - It's how Clarityray's destroying Adblock.
* Addons slowup slower usermode browsers layering on more - & bloat RAM consumption + excessive cpu use too (4++gb extra in FireFox https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth...)
(Instead, work w/ a more capable native kernelmode part you already have - hosts (An integrated part of the ip stack))

Re:About D%^& time.
Probably because partner videos and claimed videos tend to use Flash even on PCs set to use HTML5.
I haven't had Flash installed for a long time. You could work around this issue by using an addon like YouTube Center to always force HTML5, and YouTube Center also provides other useful features. But, as I discovered recently when setting up a new computer, even YouTube Center hasn't been needed for at least a month. So (at least in Firefox) HTML5 only YouTube has worked for all videos for some time and is perhaps only just now being announced.

The "Download YouTube Videos as MP4" addon
Been using the Download YouTube Videos as MP4 addon for years, together with 865,260 other people.
It creates a css drop down button under the player, you click on it and 320p 720p 1080p links shows up, one more click and you can save the video as mp4.
Never installed flash ever since.

Re:Already Better Than New OperaI have little to no interest in Opera 15+, but they continually contribute to the Chromium/Blink codebase, which can be easily seen in the Opera 15+ changelogs.
As far as Firefox being state of the art, give me a fucking break. They've been working on multi-threaded FF (Electrolysis) for going on 6 years now, and every time it gets force-enabled in FF Nightly it breaks _EVERYTHING_:UserCSS, broken
UserScript (Greasemonkey), broken
LastPass, broken
TreeStyleTabs, mostly broken
RequestPolicy - and every other extension of its ilk, completely borked. The only thing it appears to do, is make it "seem like" FF is responsive, except it still takes just as long to load a large session. Except all the tabs just say "New Tab" for ages, until they actually get their title.
Now the one thing that e10s (Electrolysis) CAN do, is close a window without locking up every FF window for an extended period of time.
So FF seems like it is responsive, but that's just a sham. It just isn't "not responding" during the time while it loads a large session. I have tabs loaded in the background, so only the single tab in a given window needs to actually be loaded, yet it still takes 5-10 minutes to load a large session (restore their title, favicon, and tab position). WTF.
Mozilla expenses for software development in 2012 was almost $150,000,000. --- does that sound like "small development team" to you? -

Can ghostery/adblock do 16 things hosts do for more speed, security, & reliability:
1.) Protect you vs. malicious sites/servers (beyond malicious adbanners: See 2-10 next)
2.) Protect you vs. fastflux botnets + stop their communication back to C&C servers
3.) Protect you vs. dynamic dns botnets + stop their communication back to C&C servers
4.) Protect you vs. DGA botnets + stop their communication back to C&C servers
5.) Protect you vs. downed DNS servers (adds reliability)
6.) Protect you vs. DNS redirect poisoned dns servers
7.) Protect you vs. DNS amplification attacks
8.) Protect you vs. trackers
9.) Protect you vs. spam sources
10.) Protect you vs. phishing sources
11.) Get you past a dnsbl you don't like
12.) Keep you off dns request logs
13.) Speed up websurfing by adblocking & also hardcoding favorite sites
14.) Work on ANY webbound app (think stand-alone email programs).
15.) Give you direct easily texteditor controlled data for all of the above
16.) Do all of those things & block ads (better than addons) more efficiently in cpu cycles + memory usage* "?"

BOTH do far less than hosts do & less efficiently - hosts by way of comparison, do MORE w/ less.
Both add more complexity/room for breakdown/exploit + from a slower mode of operations (usermode = more messagepassing overheads vs. hosts in kernelmode).
Hosts start w/ the IP stack itself before REDUNDANT inefficient addons BEGIN to operate (as 1st resolver queried).

AdBlock = Inferior + 'Souled-Out'... apk
APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ SR-1 32/64-bit:
http://start64.com/index.php?o...
FREE & adds speed, security, + reliability, doing more with less, more efficiently vs. addons + fixes DNS' redirect security issues:
---
A.) Hosts do more than:
1.) AdBlock ("souled-out" 2 Google/Crippled by default http://techcrunch.com/2013/07/... )
2.) Ghostery (Advertiser owned) - "Fox guards henhouse" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G...
3.) Request Policy -> http://yro.slashdot.org/commen...B.) Hosts add reliability vs. downed/redirected dns (& overcome site redirects e.g.
/. beta).C.) Hosts secure vs. malicious domains too -> http://tech.slashdot.org/comme... w/ less "moving parts" complexity
D.) Hosts files yield more:
1.) Speed (adblock & hardcodes fav sites - faster than remote dns)
2.) Security (vs. malicious domains serving malcontent + block spam/phish & trackers)
3.) Reliability (vs. downed or Kaminsky redirect vulnerable dns, 99% = unpatched vs. it & worst @ isp level + weak vs DGA, & Fastflux + dynDNS botnets)
