Can adblock do these 15 things hosts files can for more speed, security, reliability, & more:

1.) Secure you vs. known malicious sites/servers (beyond malicious adbanners - see 2 thru 6 below next)

Their wiki looks very ambitious. Can they actually find enough developers and QA people to make it all happen?

According to https://developer.mozilla.org/... you just need to make sure that c:\mozilla-build comes before cygwin on the PATH and run something like start-shell-msvc2013.bat (various bat files depending on msvc version). Pretty simple.
Mozilla doesn't require exact versions of everything, it just needs working versions of everything and if you're worried about problems with Mercurial, just use your default Python 2.7 and corresponding hg.exe.
Best to start by following their exact instructions then pruning the files in \mozilla-build and testing. generally most of the tools can be replaced. There are exceptions like autoconf213 which is totally incompatible with newer autoconfs.
For most tools it doesn't matter the exact version as long as the required features are supported, which in general means fairly up to date and non-buggy like some versions of sed. The configure script even does some checks for bad versions.
Best practices are frequent backups so if you do screw a repository with using the wrong VCS version you can recover and getting in the habit of using scripts to setup your environment.
It is a bit more time consuming and works best at the command prompt so may not be worth it for you but not that hard.

I haven't tried it yet, but on their marketing blurb says that "users of X, y, z.... should try PriceBlink". This suggest to me that there's already quite a few add-ons that work for shoppers. Time to give them all a try!

W. Palant wrote me by email 1st saying "hosts are a shitty solution" to which I replied:

Which on my latter 'point-in-challenge' on efficiency AdBlock's proven by research to be MASSIVELY inefficient -> https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth... & adblock does FAR less than hosts (especially crippled by default).

I sent Wladimir Palant that challenge in response to his statement from 2 different email addresses I use!

You have an interesting definition of mandatory, considering TreeStyle Tab still exists along with other addons that change tab behaviour. Seriously, try it. Gets rid of the goofy curved tabs too.

Everyone should be using TST or something similar; if you're using a widescreen display and have the tabs anywhere but the side you're just wasting valuable vertical space while making your tabs harder to manage.

Just curious, what has been breaking for you? What UI features have changed in some significant way since Australis?

SINCE Australis? Nothing major. In a recent version they changed the right click context menu to include icons for reload/back/forward, which irritated me - change for the sake of change. (Also the keyboard shortcut for Private Browsing no longer works - might be a plugin? Not sure.)

Things like that seem little but when you've been using Firefox for years - which I have, every day, for work - little changes like that mean the platform loses a lot of stability, which is one of the things that is most important when you're trying to get things done.

I'm not at all opposed to new features. I don't even care about feature bloat that much. But they should be opt-in. And at the very least, you should be able to opt-out without having to install some third party plugin. Having a new UI/UX forced on me just feels ... rude.

Australis prompted me to install Classic Theme Restorer so I could restore the browser to the way I'd been using it for /years/. (Here's my +5 post about why I disliked Australis.) Enough has been written about Australis so I won't whine about that any more.
