Re:Calendars
I only have 2500 emails in my Exchange inbox, but found Outlook was struggling -- possibly we have an old version, I'm not sure.
I like Thunderbird's Full Text Search, and now use Thunderbird for 95% of the emails I send. It has a threaded email view, a bit like GMail, which I also prefer. I still use Outlook (or my phone) for my calendar.
I don't know how it would cope with 10,000s of emails. The initial import would take a while.

Re:GMAil needs better bkup system
not everyone has outlook,
So use Thunderbird or Mutt or Mulberry or Evolution or Alpine or hell how about any of the others in this list under freeware or open source.
Email is based on open standards. There are hundreds of email clients if you are willing to take the time to look for them, and all of them (arguably) are better than Outlook. -
Re:Why bother?
WTF? It's like saying somebody should buy an F1 car just because it's fastest
I agree 100%. People should buy a machine to suit their needs. Anyone who blindly buys the fastest model available is just being egotistical and foolish.
which does not cost them their house and children
A new Mac mini goes for $599 and a MacBook is $999. This is hardly "house and children" figures. Pick a reasonable Mac then go to Dell and spec out a similar machine. The PC prices will be in a close neighborhood.
not require special fuel and can run on ordinary road
This article is not about the iPhone. It is about Apple systems running OS X that can utilize Boot Camp.
Hardly any "special fuel" required on OS X systems. Take your pick from any of the great open source apps available for the platform: Firefox, Thunderbird, Inkscape, Gimp, VLC, Eclipse, the list goes on. Wanna write some code? Xcode comes free with OS X. Don't wanna use Xcode, then use another IDE or directly use make, gcc, gdb, and vim.
As for your "ordinary road" comment
... I'm writing this on a four year old iMac. Over the years I've upgraded the memory (Crucial has great prices) and hard drive (1TB was only $99 at Fry's). My mouse of choice is a five button Logitech scroll mouse. I hardly feel "locked in" or "abused".Way to go on a tangent!
Way to spread FUD. How about we just let people use the computer that best suits their needs.
Getting back on topic, I've been running Windows 7 in both Boot Camp and Parallels 5 with no problems. I don't know what the damage is with this "article".

Back your data up
It is probably because they don't want some malicious third party developer to trick you into allowing access and then deleting all of your contacts.
Ha! What if some third party developer were to trick me into using an email application and then deleting all my emails? Oh wait, somehow I managed to use well respected third party applications with Gmail without any problems. Yet somehow I can't synchronize my contacts with my other address books... hmmm
Paranoid much? Ever hear of something called BACKING UP your data?
Also, if a developer makes a syncing contacts application, what if it has a bug that screws up all of your contacts?
Only a fool doesn't make backups. If you don't bother to back your data up you deserve the problems. I'm pretty sure the clever folks at Google can provide some means of allowing backups and even rollbacks of user data.

And for those of us not wanting to fill entire filing cabinets with emails, I suggest using Thunderbird to download your messages.

E-mail is Preferable, it can be Filtered
Although it would be best if email marketers were simply swallowed by the earth and sent directly to wherever it is the bad people go, if they are going to continue annoying us then I would prefer that it be through email and not postal mail. At least with email they are competing on our playing field where we have a decisive technical advantage in filtering. If the choice is between them stuffing my post box with paper or trying to stuff my inbox with spam (they will fail due to ThunderBayes among others. What's the word? Thunderbird) then I say bring on the spam, we are ready.

Re:Thunderbird
Thunderbird 2 is effected by this, but afaik there is no Thunderbird 3.
Is this is a death sentence for the project?

Looks like you're in luck.
