Mp3elf
mp3elf is pretty cool. Open source design documents / diagrams, too.

Hundreds of feet of audio cabling
Bad idea. It's MP3... just put an MP3 player in the room and use network cable. You can buy an old Vectra (that would do this fine) for like $50. Or you can use dedicated audio widgets like the very open mp3elf.

Similar OpenSource project
MP3elf is the same, just better (more features), fully open-source and has existed for over a year.

Sorta off-topic
Has anyone had any experience with the mp3elf? I'm thinking about getting one, but would like to know if anyone else has one...

Re:Advice on building your own?
You can find discussion areas like people using TINI embedded Java card along with STA013 mp3 decoder [greenend.org.uk] to do it but they all seem to be characterized by an initial burst of activity and then a trailing off once enthusiasm fades away...
Thanks. MP3elf and PJRC MP3 player look like the sort of thing I was thinking, and available in kit form.

Re:Rio Receiver with Linux ServerIt is the ONLY completely open-source player, and the ONLY one to use a high quality vacuum fluorescent display instead of a tiny backlit LCD.
Have you seen the mp3elf? It's completely open source, including the hardware design. It uses the TINI from Dallas / Maxim to handle the ethernet / TCP/IP side of things. I've ordered a couple of TINIs since they seem really cool and cheap, too - as soon as mine comes in I'm going to put a mp3elf together.

Re:The Competition
Also have a look at the MP3elf
This is an open source hardware and software project that I am involved with.
We have just released our second revision board.
The system consists of an embedded java computer in the mp3elf device itself and server side software, also written in java.
The server can work with the JReceiver software that has been mentioned elsewhere. This gives it the ability to play back Ogg via JReceiver's transcoding support -
Other Ethernet Based MP3 players
One that has been tested and works is the MP3Elf, based on the cool Java-based TINI board from Dallas Semi. Another TINI-based MP3 player is here,
although it's still in the planning stages. The nifty thing about the MP3Elf is that it's open source _and_ hardware so you can build your own. They've sold some bare boards so you can assemble your own, although I'm not sure what they're planning for the future.
