No Toshiba Gigabeat or MPMan?
It's strange the neither the Toshiba Gigabeat nor any of the MPMan-players are included in this review. Some of the MPMan-players got a battery life of 50 and even 100 hours.

Re:Batteries?
Thats funny these people have always claimed to have had the first portable MP3 Player on the market.

After looking...
at the details (id3 tags used as appointments) this has about as much relevance as the guy who makes a swimming pool by placing a hose in the back of a pickup truck.... This could be done with any MP3 player that supports id3 tags and subfolders. Why not step back 2 years and look at the mp3 players that had (semi)-REAL pims built into them. The second generation mpman (MP-F30) comes to mind, I owned one and it worked great in linux, and also let me store phone numbers, contacts, etc....Not much of a threat to the PDA market...

Unimpressive but useful
Saehan, the makers of the Mpman plan on releasing an HD based solution sometime this year. According to the published specs, it's going to be only marginally bigger than the current crop of MP3 players.
Personally, after considering waiting for a while to get the new Mpman, I decided to go with the Rio SE, because 1) it's unclear when Saehan will release their new product, and 2) the price is going to be more than what I'm willing to pay for a spruced up walkman.
One other thing. I see a lot of talk here about mp3 players overpriced, but the cheapest Sony MD player is $250 MSRP, with recorders priced as high as $600-800, and the last walkman I bought (Sony EX614 in 1997) was about $150. I don't know why paying $250 for a player capable of playing back 45 minutes of CD quality sound (mp3 at 160 bits) and offering "recording" capabilities without encumbering you with flaky media is so absurd.

Someone is doing it right...
Someone is doing it right, and that's Saehan Information System's MPMan product line. If you look at their webpage you will see the new models they have in store for '99. They all have alphanumeric displays that can display ID3 information in any language possible and headphones with built-in controls. They also have many different models using many different storage mediums.
1. Smartmemory cards
2. Iomega Clik Disks
3. Slim type hardrives
The folks at Saehan know what their doing. We'll be able to get more information on these new models at CeBit '99 in Hannover, Germany. Until then, check out the website at http://www.mpman.com.
