Court Rejects msfreepc.com Settlement Claims
mr_tommy writes "Neowin has posted a link to a court ruling (pdf) on the controversial MSfreepc.com website. The court ruled that claims in the Microsoft antitrust settlement made via the site were not legitimate, and as such all submissions made through it would be rejected. The website, operated by Lindows.com, attempted to use the Californian settlement against Microsoft to its own benefit by getting users to signup and make a claim. Lindows saw an opportunity to capitalise on the ruling by getting Microsoft to pay for users to have Lindows software and hardware; undoubtedly too bitter a pill for Microsoft to take. Microsoft filed suit against the website Michael Robertson, owner of Lindows and a strong anti-Microsoft voice, will undoubtedly be disappointed with the ruling. The 'legitimate' site for claims is still available." -
Microsoft Sends Takedown Notice To MSFreePC.com
DJFelix writes "Just to add some more drama in California this week, legal counsel for Microsoft issued a takedown notice to Lindows CEO Michael Robertson, demanding the immediate shutdown of the MSFreePC.com website. The MSFreePC.com website allows people who purchased certain Microsoft products in California, or used certain Microsoft products in California to submit a claim in the $1.1 billion class action suit Microsoft lost in California. The site is still up for now, but how long will it last?" -
Class Action Philanthropy?
Graymalkin asks: "I just got my paperwork to join in on the class action suit against Microsoft in California. I think I missed out on the free PC from Lindows and besides I've really got no need for a new system. Since I've got a few of these vouchers coming to me I was thinking instead of getting something for myself I could transfer them to a 501(c)(3) OSS group. The $16 per voucher isn't a lot but enough of them could really add up. According to the paperwork a person can donate up to $650 worth of vouchers and any single charity or group can receive up to $10,000 worth of vouchers. I'm wondering if any sites have been set up to help facilitate this sort of thing. I could of course just get cash for it and leave an anonymous package on the doorstep of the nearest OSS project but I was hoping for something a little more suave. Any leads, links, other that might help me and possibly other philanthropic souls out?" -
Californians Can Get Free MS-Settlement PCs
soliaus writes "Seeing as how Microsoft recently lost the anti-trust lawsuit in California, Lindows has taken charge and is offering people free Lindows-related goodies. Basically, Lindows files a claim on your behalf, they keep the money, and you can get a copy of Lindows; a Click-N-Run subscription; a free PC; or other Lindows goods. More information about filing a claim on your own can be found here." (Note that this only applies if you purchased a computer for use in California.) Other companies will probably come out with their own approach to trading settlement money for goods, too, so if Lindows isn't your choice, waiting is a good idea.
