Re:Build one
That web was quite useful since I do live in Australia. I did take a look at a few builds however I can build an i7-6700 with Z170M-D3H motherboard, 16GB DDR4 (2800), 120GB SSD, WD 3TB BLACK HDD, 500W Case, Wireless with a reasonable 1080p 27" monitor as well as a reasonable keyboard and mouse for under the AU1500.00. Of course I did not include a graphics card or more expensive monitor since that could easily add over a $1000 or more to the mix.
Still that site http://www.itwarehouse.com.au/... is a good starting point and would be excellent for for people living in Australia that just want a reasonable PC without going to the trouble of building one. It is also better then going to a department store. For those that want to build you can always try http://www.msy.com.au/home.php which is great for parts.

Re:Honeymoon is over
In Australia were I live we can buy Linux netbooks quite easily if you know were to look, however most people don't and most upmarket stores only stock the Win XP models. From my personal perspective why would you buy a netbook from a department store that is AU$100 dearer than what I can get from smaller store.
If you look at this site (pdf file) you can see that the Windows version is exactly the same price as the Linux one - see below:
Asus EeePC 7" EEEPC 4G 701SD Linux+Open office "Black" "VIC ONLY" - $299
Asus EeePC 7" 701SD Linux + 4GB SD + Free USB Mouse "White" - $319
Asus EeePC 7" XP HOME + 4GB SD + Free USB Mouse" - $319
Looking at the zero difference between the Linux and XP Home eddition you could actually draw the conclusion that Win XP Home is worth exactly AU$0.00. What is even more interesting is even if you look at the 9" EeePC (AU$499) from the same shop which has Win XP, the Office Suite is actually Star Office so Open Source software still gets a plug even though Star Office is not exactly free unlike Open Office which is basically the same thing.
I think it would be relatively safe to say that Microsoft is quite willing to give away Win XP for free if it prevents people from considering Linux.
The problem with the netbooks is while they started off small and cheap they seem to be approaching the same price and size of a standard laptop which sort of negates the advantage of a netbook. I suppose this does make Microsoft happy.
Note: At the time of writing AU$1.00 = US$0.7088. -
Re:12 GB HDD Vs 20 GB HDDAt a Sydney launch event for the much-anticipated Eee PC 900 model, local product manager Albert Liang revealed that the XP model would sell for $599 in Australia, while the Linux model would be $649. To cover the licence cost associated with Windows XP Home and Microsoft Works ? which replace a custom version of the Xandros Linux distribution and OpenOffice ? the XP model has just 12GB of storage, while the Linux version has 20GB. Ok the the above prices are for the Eee PC 900 model which is not out yet but you are looking at a price from a Department Store which is not known for being cheap.
From the following web site MSY (only a few Km from where I live):
Asus EeePC 7" Linux + Open office ?Mum?s Day Specials? AU$395
Asus EeePC 7" XP HOME + 4GB SD + Free USB Mouse AU$535
From the same place you can get a 4GB SD card for AU21.00 and a USB mouse for AU5.00 and if you do the math then XP Home is worth AU$106 (AU$1 == US$0.94).
Given the above much cheaper prices (ok it is the 7" model) if I was in the market for this type of PC I would not get it at a department store and most people (example: students) who really want something like this would do a web search first (or at least they should) before buying anyway. -
Re:$200-250 is NOT cheap!
You call $400 for a video card expensive??
In Australia, the 8800 GTS 640MB is STILL (i.e. as of today), AU$500 (about $450 US according to Google). The current top of the line video card from nVidia (the 8800 Ultra) is still AU$985 (or $900 US from Google). These prices are for ASUS video cards, from MSY (pdf), which is the cheapest shop I've ever found here.
