Re:Captain Obvious?
Of god that is so true it is not even funny.
:-)"Politics" (and ego) is the number one reason "Real World" software sucks so much.

Mr. Bob,
I would like you to review the text of the 1st Amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Please take note that the first word of the amendment is Congress and is followed by the absolute term "...shall make no law..." This means just what it states.
I also feel it would be helpful for you to review the writ of habeas corpus to better understand the Suspension Clause:
Aritlce I, Section 9, Clause 2 The privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in cases of rebellion or invasion the public safety may require it.
Of course, I already know your rebuttal: Murphy's Golden Rule.

Re:Waldos
Not quite, but rather automatics not very different from the automatic doors you have at supermarkets.
A little bit smarter, but still prone to stupid decisions.
And also - it's the lowest bidder that has made the weapon. Just go see the Murphy's war law.

Re:SSDs have one infallible data recovery optionMost filesystems only does a removal of the reference to a file when a file is deleted. A few may offer the added feature of overwriting when deleting a file. If I remember right OpenVMS actually has an option to the DELETE command that allows this.
The second question here is if it is possible to recover data that has been overwritten on a solid state device. It is possible on magnetic disks, but a solid state device is encapsulated in a much more rigorous manner which means that it will be a lot harder. However, it may still be possible using the right equipment.
And don't forget: Never store your important data under the directory
/tmp or /var/tmp on any *NIX machine. It will be erased! I know that this has happened, since I was working for a company where a consultant did EXACTLY this. That consultant stored all his sources there! And the system erased all files older than 14 days, and since it was /tmp there was no backup. That person had to do it the HARD way because there was no way that there was any possibility to recover that data. I have no idea what became of that consultant after that was cleaned up, but I sure hope that he at least didn't make that mistake again! One of the classical Murphy's law moments...

Don't worry, this is about software
In a world with imperfect laws, enforcing the laws perfectly is immoral, unjust, and IMHO, just insane.
No non-trivial software is perfect. -
Re:In other news
And right now some law firm could be tracking down every use of the phrase 'Murphy's law' on behalf of the family of Capt. Edward A. Murphy and some other law firm could be tracking down every use of 'Spoonerism' for the family of The Reverend W. A. Spooner... They'll get to Furphy sooner or later, as well.
Not to mention McDonald's absurd claim of trademark on the 'Mc' prefix!
This is the insanity that the concept of 'Intellectual Property' has condemned us to. When will the public get fed-up enough to rebel and prod the Congress to moderate the law? -
Re:FrustratedI must apologize to Murphy[0]. I've always blamed Murphy for computer problems when all along I should have been blaming Finagle.
So, Mr. Murphy (RIP), my sincerest apologies.
[0] - or was it Sod?[1]
[1] - So, who should I really blame? I'm so confused.[2]
[2] - Ahh, Sod it. -
Just karma whoring
With a 2 sec google search:
Murphy's Law
If I remember correctly, there is even a picture of the guy in question, and some pretty funny story to in the "Origin of Murphy's Law" section... -
Re:Who was Sod then?
According to this page, sod's law was the original name for "if anything can go wrong it will" and has been around for much longer than "Murphy's Law". The 'sod' simply refers to an arbitrary unfortunate individual..

Murphy's Law
The device includes secret digital keys -- large binary numbers -- that cannot easily be altered.
Easily? They would probably say that Windoze is an OS that could not easily be replicated as well.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I know quite a few people who will poor their lives into doing something that someone else says "cannot be done easily." (...and will almost definitely succeed)
(begin M$-Rant)
Also, I believe Microsoft falls under Murphy's Law, "If there is any way to do it wrong, he [Bill] will find it."
