Mushkin
http://www.mushkin.com/ is your best friend in the whole world, maybe. I know they're mine. I'm so lonely...

This Puts a Smile on my Face
No for those poor people who got screwed on RAM prices, but that I bought Mushkin memory instead of Micron, Infineon, or any others. Damn good memory. Their Blue Line memory really has one of the best bang for the buck. About 4 months ago the price for 2 x 256 MB PC3200 Blue Line Mushkin memory cost about $112 on Newegg. Sadly, the price has risen about $30, but the price of a 1 x 512 MB DIMM is at $108.

Memory
I've found that Mushkin is a great place to get high-quality memory at a good price. They shipped quickly and have the whole range of speeds & qualities.

Re:DIY Computer Construction
New Egg [newegg.com] - parts (e.g. cases, cards, motherboards, etc...)
Crucial [crucial.com] - memory
Agreed, add Mushkin on the memory list though.
Of course, New Egg sells both Mushkin and Crucial memory -- sometimes for cheaper than what they sell it for. So we're back to recommendation number 1. -
RAM
I see a lot of people recommending Crucial. That's fine; I'm sure they make great stuff. I just wanna point out that Mushkin has inspired similar loyalty.

This is how to do it:First read a lot of reviews for mobo's, cpu's, graphics and other cards.
Good places to start are anandtech and Tom's HardwareOnce you have decided what you want, you can do this for most of your items:
- Check Pricewatch for lowest prices. (they now include S&H in the total)
- Check the credibility of the companies with the lowest prices on pricewatch with ResellerRatings.com
.
I cant emphasize this enough. THIS is the most important step.
The only Item I would recommend you go to a specific store for is memmory. This is very important if you're looking to overclock and are going to be running at higher FSB's. Even if you're not, it can save you a lot of headaches to be sure your memmory is good.
I'd recommend Mushkin or Corsair memmory, they always come out tops in every review I've read. Also, every stick I've bought of these have been of the best quality and can usually be run above spec.Other stuff:
You may be interested in special items, like a modded case, or a watercooling setup, these you have to look into yourself and you won't find them on pricewatch. Not necessary to build a computer. -
Re:Pricewatch
While Pricewatch may not be the best place for reliable vendors, Mushkin Ram certainly is! Their memory is extrememly well made, stable, and relatively compitive in price. (and no I do not work for them)
Also the 4GB ram there is NOT a single 4GB Dimm, but rather 4x 1G PC100 ECC Memory

Muskin. This text here to defeat the lamo lameness compression filter.

Re:Never mind 99.9, try 99.999
...*ALL* windows 2000 bluescreens are caused by faulty memory....
Memory modules fried by static electricity coming off of the fingertips of arrogant oafs.
Mushkin Memory is trying to educate the, in my opinion, uneducatable on this subject. Good luck to them.
I took my brand new Asus mobo I was having trouble setting up to a local computer shop. The owner, standing on carpet with sneakers on, starts handling it with his hands all over it, clearly touching the solder-points on the bottom. Uuugh. I hate shit like that. And you know if you say something intelligent you'll get shot down because otherwise he would have to admit to his ignorant multi-decade career of electro-static destruction. -
Who's baiting whom? From the same Anandtech article:
Those looking to save quite a bit of money on their motherboard and memory should definitely take a look at the 694D Pro, but since this is a dream system, we'll go with the slightly faster i840 despite the large price premium.
The price premium is still around 30%-60%, for RAM which is usually slower.
