Re:Wow. big news.
Oh hell yeah.
The former lead guitarist in my band had something similar, but a lot more sophisticated, by Nakamichi. Those things rock, but are expensive as hell.
I wouldn't want to use them on X though, there are far geeky music-related things that one can do with them =) -
Want a awsome sound systemThats why over priced?
I have used Nakamichi devices before, and they are worth every penny, if you have pennys to toss across the ocean.

Re:Great Question
Nakamichi makes a 5 disc SCSI changer that fits in a single drive bay. You could chain 7 of these together to access 35 discs. So, if you put together 6 of these CD-servers, you'd have 210 CD's!

Re:Been waiting for this for a long time
If you assume that the new laser hardware can be squezed into the same amount of space, then your practical limit is . 5 disc.

Re:That car stereo.... ugh!
Then you need to check out the Nakamichi mobile equipment. No flash, just good sound...

Re:Notebook sound
Most analog table is around 60-70, but people do make espcially good decks that do much bettter. I used to know of one, but I can't find it now.
For cd players, there are some decks that have incredibly_ SNR like the Nakamichi Dragon. -
super sounding gear that isn't that expensiveThere is really a lot of equipment available for reasonable prices that far surpass the average "consumer" components. Some are recognizable names like Sony's ES line or Pioneer's Elite line. Also check out auctions for older gear from these manufacturers - many offer 5, 10, or 20 year warranties on it, and have extensive lifetimes
other names are less recognizable like Arcam , Marantz, Rega , Rotel , NAD, and Nakamichi . But all make superlative gear for less than you'd think.
my habit has recently been Krell and Vandersteen
above all, any audiophile will tell you to listen, make adjustments, and buy and enjoy what sounds the best. all it takes is love of music

bass ... how low can you go
I've always been puzzled why people would spend so much money on a home stereo system. Recently a friend was going to purchase the Beosound 3000 from Bang & Olufsen, and I could not tell the difference between that and a Bose Wave until the salesman played different classical CD's in which certain instruments sounded crystal clear on the Bang player, and it was a bit louder.
Personally I don't need music to give me Tinitus just one to enjoy crisp sounds, at a decent price. Hell for a 6 figure price I'd have Gwen Stefani sing to me for a few hours, so this would be monstrous system at a fraction of the cost.
Technics 1200MKII about 450.00
Bose 901's about 1200.00
NAD T770 Receiver about 1200.00
Pioneer combo DVD/CD about 1,000.00
And then a house to go with it. Or I'd just get a Nakamichi SoundSpace8 (unf) instead of beating around the bush. I guess when you have money like that, it shouldn't be a problem to enjoy your life, however people shouldn't be so materialistic, since there are other more important things in life you could do with that money, send a needy person to school, feed some people in a foreign land, etc, etc. -
Some Suggestions
Personally I prefer Klipsch. For the money, they're great. For $600?/pair, I got two awesome front speakers. They have a 15" sub in the back, and a 12" sub in the front, there's no need to get a powered subwoofer. Klipsch speakers have, in my opinion, the best midrange horn in the market.
If you have some cash, get a Nakamichi receiver. If not, get a good(middle to top of the line) Pioneer, Sony or JVC receiver.
I personally like my speaker setup, 4 Klipsch in the livingroom, 2 in the bedroom, and 2 in the bathroom(flushmount in the ceiling). I have a nice switchbox that allows me to control the volume on each set, turn on/off each set, individually. I think it was about $120.
Hope it helps,
Justin
P.S. The bathroom speakers are not optional. I was just turning up the livingroom speakers to hear when I was in the shower, but the neighbors started complaining. I live in a house, they're next door. -
Re:audio elitism
Good point; I guess I'm one of those snots that would buy a separate DVD player (aside from a PS2) so that it would look nice in my audio rack. NAD and Nakamichi look great and sound great and would probably max out the vision/hearing capabilities of 99% of the public. I'd also like all my components to match, too
... BTW, I disagree that the TT drives great (try an S4, if you're gonna stick to Audi), but they do drive very well compared to many other cars out there. And although I don't think I'd ever own one, I really admire its design and inspiration. It's so refreshing to see some car manufacturers market risky designs and put some flavor into cars these days (the Chrysler PT Cruiser comes to mind, among others).
