Nano EditorThose of you who like pico but want more functionality may like nano, which is a pico clone with lots more functionality (same sort of thing as vim and elvis are to vi).
It's got a nice small footprint, and does things like "Go to line no." and a more intelligent search and replace function.
And it's open-source

a month to learn
god damn.. I've been dissin' vi users for years now and for some strange reason I recently decided "Damn it, I'm gunna learn that obscure stupid editor that you have to press 'i' before you can start typing and all the other mode lameness" and I figured it would take me a few weeks.. it took one day! one day and I had memorized half the command set and was up to my old level of efficiency in other editors, now I'm going beyond it. Ease of use often == lack of effort.

Re:one possible good result of this:
my favorite missing feature in pine
;)
Hey man.. go grab nano, a clone of pico, it rocks man.. it is so great, it has search and replace, go to line (the two big ones) and a couple of other cool features. It even has a "pico emulation mode" where it looks and acts exactly like pico. So if you don't want a multi-megabyte editor or an editor with obsficated key commands, go grab nano. -
Re: Yeah, why is the Linux kernel compressed?
And if pico isn't powerful enough give nano a try, it's got the same friendly interface with some added features.

Pico isn't free either!
Pico is under one of those UW restrictive licenses which doesn't allow distribution of modified binaries.
It is also slow, old, and a memory hog.
Nano is a GPL replacement, that retains compatability while adding new features like search&replace, regexp search, internationalization, mouse support...
Stop using that non-free crap now! And while you are at it, switch to Mutt at the same time :>
