And of course the proceedings that follow based on this is the use of thruth in a manner of "A point" this of "A point" that which often results in a distortion of what is real and honest.

The word truth has been so distorted and manipulated that someone finally challenged it...

Libertarian != Objectivist. And even Objectivists don't meet my definition of a cult.

Since I was in a cult for ten years, though, I am perhaps a bit more careful about how I use the term than are others who haven't been touched by a cult. <wry grin>

Utopian thinking is one very common characteristic of cults, but it's also common outside of cults. There are plenty of people and groups who tend towards utopianism, but who don't use thought reform techniques or otherwise meet the usual criteria for being considered a cult.

I do consider a specific offshot of Objectivism called Neotech to be a cult. Objectivism itself contains a number of cultish elements, but I wouldn't term it a cult. It's just a group of people whose thinking is overly black and white and tends not to let the facts get in the way of a good theory.

Libertarians , on the other hand, are a bunch of independent SOBs who have trouble agreeing on enough issues to form a political party, let alone a cult. ;gt; Some libertarians annoy me, but cultists they ain't.

So as many may be trying to rationalize invasion of privacy by thinking only of terrorism excuses, perhaps there is the other side of the coin as to what the feds may be looking for......like those assessing information in order to see the truth:

Assuming you don't want to fight about it, that fighting is not the goal or main desire of people, then there must be something else, something bigger that is the problem. You know, considering annual world military spending is $780 billion dollars (US) and to solve the major world humanitarian problems only needs 1/3 of that....

The problem has to be more than something under a trillion dollars.

Given the above

From theCBS article on the NSA (National Security Agency) total system failure:

"In January 2000, Gen. Mike Hayden, the director of the NSA, received a call from the agency's watch officer alerting him that all of its computers had crashed."

In that same article (in fact in the previous paragraph):

"A phone call intercepted by the NSA is often the first warning that a terrorist such as Osama bin Laden is planning an attack against Americans. To find that threatening phone call, email or radio transmission among the billions made daily, the NSA relies on rooms of supercomputers."

The date of this CBS article is Aug 29, 2001.

Do you really think maybe Y2K brought the systems all down? For what is supposed to be the top spy agency in the US? (they don't say what caused the three and a half day crash.)

Or do you perhaps see a simpler Truth to the matter, such as:

Stock market gamblers and Gov. screwed up the world economy so bad and especially for muslims that the NSA had damn good reason to KNOW what was going to happen and that they needed an excuse for their total inability to deal with it.

And Ted Turner (CNN) said something about the attack being an act of desparation. Which he later apologized for.....because of why?

...but as long as we're in violation of the law, we're open season for the government snipers. A world in which a whole community is in violation of a law is a world in which the government can arbitrarily arrest anyone, essentially a police state.

How much time does government as we know it have left? When will we reach the next stage in the evolution of "government", so called? Some problems will have to be care of along the way if "government" is to progress to a higher state, such as dealing with super-corporations that behave like their only responsibility is their bottom line. I doubt that problems regularly seen on /. in recent months, including copyrights, software patents and fair-use, will be satisfactorily resolved as long as a system of "dishonest collaboration between politicians and political businessmen" exists. Some will say that the association between politicians and buisnessmen doesn't have to be dishonest, I think that it can't be anything but. What I see here is "a world in which a whole community in violation of a law" created by buisnessmen for buisnessmen.
