Can YOU show us more Linux users by %?
Show us more users by % of marketshare/usershare on PC's & Servers combined that make Linux worth attacking as much as Windows is by malware makers? No, you cannot (1.2% = Linux marketshare/user mind share, vs. nearly 95% for Windows).
Malware makers target the MOST used OS on any given computing platform, period. Attacking Linux would be a waste of their time & efforts essentially - not enough return by %'s, & they ARE "playing the percentages" on PC's &/or Servers.
* This makes for better "ROI" for them, because they are just like pickpockets who go to crowded places like city streets, malls, train & bus stations to victimize NOT security professionals (too difficult), but rather, ordinary "noob" users who are NOT security-saavy.
So... again: What proves that on smartphones, another computing platform in mainstream use by the masses?
Well, again, you know: ANDROID does!
(It is definitely a Linux variant (because it uses a Linux kernel, unless you can show us it uses Windows or MacOS X's BSD core instead)).
Online malware makers in general today are nothing more than thieves after your monies or personal information, & they behave EXACTLY as they do...

Re:Not worrying
Insightful? For what? bragging your on an OS lower than the margin for error and therefor not worth a criminal's time. hey you should brag you are on OS/2, I bet it ain't needed a single patch in years! Meanwhile you can enjoy such fun recreational activities as 1.-hunting for fixes on forums every 6 months when the latest update deathmarch craps on 1 or more of your drivers, 2.- Having such wonderful documentation that is at best just a pile of CLI use flags, at worse a 'todo" file, 3.-having an "OS" that is just a hodge podge of programs written by a bunch of groups that have nothing to do with each other, so some follow Windows conventions, some mac, and some unix, 4.- having such wonderful QA that Dell has to run their own repos just to keep the OS from going "LOL I made a stinky!" on itself and killing the wireless, need i go on?
As for your much vaunted security? might want to look at some things, ready?
Get ready, here they come! BTW if you'd like a little more food for thought, what OS was 3 of the 4 CAs running that were compromised? take a look and see. Maybe they just had bad configs? Surely someone with knowledge would be safe right? Guess again and its not a fluke by any means.

Re:Development costs?
Got caught doing what? pointing out you're batshit? Guilty as charged. pointing out that your OS is a giant fail that has been tossed aside by virtually everyone? yep guilty. hell you can't even fucking read well enough to accurately quote someone, you think you have the skillz to do anything other than pick losers? I find that hilarious. Hell your OS can't even keep one of the oldest companies alive. Notice how they ONLY broke even after they GAVE UP? That's too fucking funny. So as a public service to all those that haven't seen what a complete miserable failure your much vaunted OS is, let me give them some fact, enjoy!

Now try the "hairyfeet challenge" which so far the best score is 6 out of 9, which still equals 3 pissed off customers. And as for the other poster whining that " I shouldn't take the PC back" because they got burned by a Windows only device? if I took that attitude I would be out of business in 6 months or less. Word of mouth can make or break a repair shop, and burning my customers doesn't build up good will. Ready for the "hairyfeet challenge? Here goes-
Open up three tabs in your browser. From this moment until the end of the challenge you are a virtual shopper and three of my customers shopping in the stores I'm about to name after buying a Kubuntu box from me. You must NOT do research before purchase! Consumers don't do research before a sale on anything less expensive than a car, and if you want to increase accuracy of the challenge buy the cheapest whenever possible, as consumers buy on features/price most of the time. Here is where you are shopping- In the first tab go to Walmart.com, second Bestbuy.com, third Staples.com. These are the "big three" and where my customers shop for gadgets. Next place on of each of these items in your virtual cart-An all in one printer, a Wifi USB card, and a USB TV Tuner. There are the three most asked about items here. Now go to Ubuntu forums and see if your items are supported. If you wish top increase accuracy you will not avoid brands like Lexmark as a consumer who isn't familiar with Linux would have no idea to avoid them.
How many carts were you able to get out of the store with 100% support? if you are lucky you got out with one cart, and that is if you "cheated" by avoiding Lexmark that the average consumer wouldn't remember to do even if you warned them beforehand. And THAT is why I can't support and sell Linux in my shop. Because those other two carts would be bringing their PC back to "fix" and when I couldn't do so I would have to return their money or risk losing business. Trying to bundle you will simply go bankrupt. I can add value to a PC purchased from me by virtue of the software and tweaks applied before you pick it up. The only difference between an all in one I carry and the one at Walmart is that Walmart will undercut me by 30% or more because they can buy them by the trainload and I can not. The margins on such items are so bad that short of buying them by the trainload I would end up losing money.
Isn't it sad, how like a frightened child afraid to look under the bed, you cower at the truth? if your driver model isn't shit then why does

Re:Development costs?
Thank you for living proof that FOSSies are batshit. you still think that I'm a guy that I can't even get along with and to this very day we don't agree on anything OTHER than the fact you're batshit? delusional much? but if its a pimp slapping of your craptastic OS you want, enjoy! See that's the nice thing about reality, while all you have is insults I have facts! Where are YOUR facts? oh right, they don't exist
:-(Get ready, here they come! Kinda makes that koolaid just a little bitter now, don't it? I believe in using the best tool for the job, but to say Linux is secure or better than any other complex OS is frankly bullshit. Hell I was talking to a 15 year Linux admin on one of the other sites that had gotten so sick of Linux fuckups they were going to BSD and if THAT didn't "just work" they were gonna wash their hands of FLOSS on the desktop and just go Mac.
BTW if you'd like a little more food for thought, what OS was 3 of the 4 CAs running that were compromised? take a look and see. Maybe they just had configs? Surely someone with knowledge would be safe right? Guess again and its not a fluke by any means.
Would you like some more reality? well here it comes! Isn't it sad, how like a frightened child afraid to look under the bed, you cower at the truth? if your driver model isn't shit then why does Dell have to run their own repos even though we are talking a teeny tiny subset of hardware? Oh right because Linux shits itself and dies if you use the default repos! Man that is some excellent product you got there! you think I can get better QA than the third largest OEM on the planet? What, you expect me to tell paying customers "Go to the forum, kiss some loser ass, and maybe, just maybe, in a few days someone will have mercy and give you a big pile of bullshit that may or may not make your sound work again"?
Bleeding yet douchey? want some more? nice thing about having the truth on your side, you can keep throwing punches all day! How about how a decade old Windows beat the shit out of Linux on netbooks or how ASUS has given up on your bullshit or how about Walmart running away from linux as fast as it can? You got the crazy koolaid drunk enough to say they ALL are paid shills because they won't do your forum dance or CLI horseshit? Meanwhile your "hero" Torvalds the great says Plans? We don't need no steenkin plans!. Why don't you tell them that at work next week, see how quick you get a pink slip? More? How about you actually have the balls to celebrate getting a whole 1% market share while you are actually lower than JavaME and there is a whole website dedicated To your bullshit and excuses
.You see you whiny little delusional mama's boy, I'm your worst fucking nightmare...a retaile

Gosh, Github.com runs Linux: Isn't it 'secure'?
Apparently not, and despite all the years of bullshit on
/. that Linux = Secure, is just that - complete bullshit, & this is just another example thereof.http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?site=github.com
Complete bullshit, to further the agendas of the desperate (who have only 1.19% of marketshare on PC Server & Desktops vs. Windows' 95% of better)...
ANDROID on smartphones does the rest (and it IS a Linux) and there's NO QUESTION it's being "shredded" on the security front too (and yet
/.'er propoganda for DECADES NOW says Linux = Secure? LMAO, bullshit!). -
Re:Signal to Microsoft?
Actually I gave up a nearly $100 an hour job for this one because i got tired of dealing with "multi platform" corporate crapfests where some PHB would see some tits of a salesgal and the next thing we knew we'd have to deal with thousands in shitty hardware or software they'd bought. Oh and really sorry to burst your bubble but...guess what? i'm actually typing on one of those systems now. the customer traded it in for a new triple core and it was such a low power unit I decided to keep it as a nettop. Its a circa 2004 Sempron, 1.5Gb of DDR, 200Gb SATA, and the same install of XP, I just cloned the old 80Gb onto the bigger drive..that's it.
You see THAT is what i find so funny, you'll jump through flaming hoops for your "free" OS but think even the most trivial of common sense, like don't open attachments or don't go to dodgy porn sites, must be too hard. hate to again burst your bubble (no I'm not) but frankly there are more than a dozen free AVs out there and pair ANY of those with any browser other than IE and the machine pretty much takes care of itself. it updates itself, defrags itself, protects itself...tell me, what do you think the odds of you getting even a 5 year old Linux up to current without a single forum hunt or CLI crapfest is? I'd say 0.0%. Hell i can install ANY version of Windows from 2K-Win 7 with nothing but a single disc and a shared folder, that's it. you see THIS is why I can charge so cheap because I get paid by the machine more often than by the hour and i can have 3 or 4 machines being installed and it requires ZERO effort, just pop in the disc, point at the shared folder on first boot, go have a sammich. Hell with Win 7 I even make money while just goofing off as any of my customers can just pop up a "Help me!" on my chat client and i can take over and install their software, walk them through hooking up that new printer, it takes minutes and its $35 a pop and they THANK ME for it.
In the end though the simple fact is the numbers don't lie and the BS you're pushing has been pushed so damned many times they actually have a website dedicated To Linux bullshit and excuses. In fact i can just take the top 20 from that site and cover every excuse and BS about FOSS that has been ever used on this site, sad really.
BTW if you'd like a little more food for thought, what OS was 3 of the 4 CAs running that were compromised not too long ago? take a look and see. Maybe they just had bad configs? Surely someone with knowledge would be safe right? Guess again and its not a fluke by any means. Oh and as for that much vaunted linux security, which you seem to think Windows can't possibly compare with? Get ready, but you're OS isn't doing so hot. In fact last time i checked Securina Linux had more critical rated vulnerabilities open than Win 2K3 or Win 2K8.

Re:You're a douche
You're dead wrong. Microsoft barely exists ouside the desktop and some AD/Exchange setups.
Sure, because Azure doesn't exist, nobody uses IIS for large website, nobody uses Dynamics and no big software vendor develops using Microsoft technology.
There's a reason MS is as big as it is, people and companies use their stuff. They may not be the biggest player in every market, but they are by no means insignificant. -

Oh look, its the FOSSie, how ya doing ya old Linux loonie? Guess you can't even support your own by supporting buying linux, nope that wouldn't let you foam at the mouth now would it? But don't worry i have some links you might find interesting, its linux pwning day! Enjoy!

Propaganda in Dragon against domain-validated SSL
Page 3 reviews Comodo Dragon. What it doesn't mention is that if an HTTPS site uses a certificate that's domain validated, Dragon raises a warning "that the organization operating it may not have undergone trusted third-party validation that it is a legitimate business." Might this just be a way to threaten small-time webmasters, especially those who only started offering HTTPS to join EFF's HTTPS Everywhere initiative or to offer user accounts without running the risk of getting Firesheeped, into buying pricier EV certificates?

Re:Linux security in 2011 then... apk
Interestingly, the CAs which got breached, disclosed the breach, revoked the malicious certs and recovered were running Linux...
The CA which got breached so thoroughly that their private key was compromised and their certs had to be globally blacklisted, effectively putting them out of business...
http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?site=diginotar.com
Yup, they were running windows.
Seems the CAs which also happened to be running linux were savvy enough to take precautions to protect their private keys... A few malicious certs being generated is bad, but those can be revoked... Losing your private key is catastrophic because whoever stole it can generate as many certs as they want and there's nothing you can do about it.
The DUQU rootkit targets windows systems, why were they using linux systems to distribute and control the malware? Probably because it's more stable and has a more usable command line interface...
How did they get into these linux systems? How many linux systems are administered from windows workstations? Most windows hacks i've seen were down to security holes in the OS...
Most linux hacks i've seen were down to either gross stupidity (poor passwords etc), or due to passwords being compromised from somewhere else (eg a keylogger on a windows box used to login to the linux box). -

Re:How about going back to flat-rate data?
[hairyfeet] who is a top poster on
/, uses [Comodo] Dragon as his browser simply because it uses DNSSEC to its own secure DNS servers that filter out malware domains.Comodo Dragon also uses an end-run around the oft-repeated suggestion to use DNSSEC to replace CAs: any cert that isn't EV gets a warning page.
-
Comodo is already fighting this
I have felt that this is a good idea for a very long, long, long time. The thing on the Internet that tells you where to go to get to a domain name is the DNS server. Thus, the owner of the DNS server really should be the source of the certificate public keys, not some random 3rd party whose true interests lie in selling certificates more cheaply and doing just enough certification that they aren't actually deemed to be insecure.
Which means random third parties will try other methods to sell certificates. A CA might, say, fork Chrome and have it give a warning page for any certificate that isn't EV. Comodo Dragon already does this: "The security (or SSL) certificate for this website indicates that the organization operating it may not have undergone trusted third-party validation that it is a legitimate business."
