Re:The biggest downside to Firefox
There used to me a link on the portable firefox page to a mozillazine thread about it, I went looking for the link, but couldn't find it. With the addition of the firefox launcher for portable firefox it looks like these tweaks aren't needed for portable firefox. I google'd around and found a link to a page about authoring XUL extensions and covers using a "chrome://" path to refer to internal components (see figure 4). So it looks like all of an extensions internal references are relative to "chrome://", while the external references to the XUL file itself aren't, but the references XUL files can be set relative to "chrome://" and still work fine. If you've got any further questions let me know.

Re:Excellent commentary...
they merely are standards that have actually been implemented in Moz
I see.. So you're saying that support for something isn't a feature. That's interesting.
But maybe HTML/XHTML and CSS are "mozilla features"
Yes.. XHTML is a feature of Mozilla. It's not exactly one of IE's. CSS to a certain extent as well. -
Dual Monitor usage
I've got two monitors at work, where I do web development. I keep whatever I'm working on open in one monitor, and I've got Firefox running with the finished product open on the other. It's pretty handy to see what exactly you've done instead of just a preview in Design Mode in Dreamweaver or whatever. Also, I'm using Firefox's GMail notifier, so I don't have to dedicate an entire monitor to e-mail.
At school , I do things a bit differently. In Flash, Photoshop, Director, etc. I generally try to have one screen dedicated to the visual stuff and another screen for code and/or toolbars. The bigger the screen, the higher the resolution, the better. It's all about cramming as much of what I'm working on into the screens as possible.
At home, I get along with just one 17" CRT. Blah. -

Right...Yes, Google is blocking Third Party Checkers. So that must be why when I open up Firefox, GMail Notifier alerts me that I have seven messages waiting for me. If you would, take a look at their changelog:
Current version: 0.3.3 * Gmail changed, which broke notifiers, updated login code to the new system.
So yes, Google changed the login system, and the software was updated to work with it. Does this seem like an attempt to block other clients from checking GMail? Not really. It looks more like they updated their software, and it had a side effect which was apparently fairly easily correctable.
It looks to me as if a few people here decided to take the Third Part Checker article to be the absolute, unbending truth, and didn't bother to check around to make sure it was. -
Prefer the Firefox extensions...
I prefer the Firefox extensions.
Gmail Notifier:

Web Mail Compose:

In my opinion, they offer a better solution.

Re:this is awesome
This is a nice to that makes a "Compose GMail" option when you click a mailto: link.
This is the GMail Notifier that I think the parent was referring to. It displays the simple text "Gmail" at the bottom right of the browser window by the down button on the scroll bar. Hovering over it displays the number of unread emails, single clicking it opens gmail in a new tab, and double clicking lets you add, change, ir remove gmail login info. You should know that Google has blocked this program at least twice before so don't be alarmed if it stops working, just keep an eye on the webpage for a newer version.
Also, another neat google plugin displays a thumbnail to the left of many search results. It too displays the simple text "GP" near the bottom right scroll button. Single click it to turn it on and off again.
If you still have that invite, I could use one. My friend just finished his tour of duty in the air force and a bit jealous that I have a gmail account and he doesn't. -
Re:How long....
Hey, THANK YOU. This works great, one little problem, your link goes to an old version. Here http://nexgenmedia.net/extensions/ is the developers page for the latest version. The version you link to has issues but once I updated it works perfectly.

Re:How long....
There is already a Mozilla (and Firefox) extension for this, GMail Notifier (homepage http://www.nexgenmedia.net/extensions/). It works with both the Linux and windows versions of the browser.

Gmail Notifier
This is something that has been in the fires for a while for Firefox users. Doron Rosenberg authored an extension that allows the same functionality. You can find it here.

FireFox extension
I've been using something similar as an extension to FireFox. It works pretty darn well, but you obviously have to keep your web browser open for it to work. This program might be pretty cool, I'll have to give it a shot.
For those interested, the Firefox extension can be found here:
