Hatsune Miku sings Pi
I'd rather listen to Daniwell's version of Miku Hatsune singing 10,000 digits of Pi:

Re:Hmmm.
"HD Verified" sounds suspiciously like a way to extract more money out of someone.
NicoNico, the big Japanese video sharing site, already does that. "Premium Members get access to speedy video playback, priority seating for live broadcasts, and more! Seamless video playback even during heavy usage! 540 JPY/month!"
It's a bit late to be charging people extra for 720p, but charging extra for 2160p ("4K video") may be something the industry tries.

Re:Vocaloid
Miku actually got popular by the vast amount of fan made viral musics spread in Nico Nico Douga.

Re:This is so stupid.
I like this line of thinking. But it's still got to be free to upload videos. How about that you'd have to pay to have unrestricted uploading privileges? If you pay for a Premium YouTube account, you can upload >10min of video and the videos can surpass the 1GB limit.
Plus YouTube can make more features worth paying for. How about a Live YouTube feed? Pay to create one, and it'd be free to watch for anyone else. Something like that.
Another site I regularly peruse, nicovideo.jp, already does something like this.

Anime in Excel
Speaking of Excel, I came across a bunch of clips the other day on NicoNico Douga where they used Excel to draw video. Here are some YouTube mirrors of those videos, since the original site is Japanese and registration-only:

Japan just likes it 1.0
For some strange reason, quite many Japanese sites, specifically message boards and chat rooms (tcup for instance), are completely outdated. They've been created in the mid or late 90's and never been upgraded since then. The trend might be gradually reversing but it isn't going fast and there doesn't appear to be a major interest in the Web 2.0 (nicovideo.jp is a good Japanese YouTube though). It's quite paradoxical to think in some aspect Japan is so low-tech on the web. But then again the most interesting sites are not always the ones on the cutting-edge...

Re:long live Tor
The solution is to find a video site that still works. Nico Nico Video is one of them.

Alternatively...
I find that Nico Nico Video is still accessible and fully usable. Yes, call me a weeaboo all you like for using a Japanese site but at least it works.

The Idolmaster
One of the few games with truly successful downloadable content sales. The game itself may not have been perfect -- far from it -- but seeing its ingame footage almost single-handedly boost one of Japan's Youtube clones, NicoNico Douga, to popularity rivaling the video giant was a sight to behold.

Re:Excellent opportunity to test multiple choices
I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss subscriber-based services. A Japanese Youtube clone called NicoNico Video has approx. 2million IDs (considering that most people have multiple accts for no good reason the actual viewer count's probably closer to 1million) to date, and latest reports they have 50,000+ users on a 500yen/month 'premium' account. It's still a minority group, but if Youtube could get a similar percentage of people to sign up for a premium account, that's a good amount of money they could be making.

Kadokawa holdings deal
Wonder if it's got anything to do with Kadokawa Group's deal with Google. I found it amusing that they were helping develop this kind of system for Google, since they're probably one of the few groups that have really gotten some sales/publicity boost from user-generated content on Youtube and NiconicoVideo.

Nico Nico Douga
This Japanese YouTube clone (currently in closed gamma) lets viewers add their comments in the form of subtitles that scroll across the video. It's like the inanity of YouTube mixed with the inanity of 2ch. Wait, maybe this wasn't a good response to a post about online video getting brainy.
