FWIW, this sounds like a pretty standard infiltration attack, regardless of motive: sockpuppet multiple accounts with a couple of friends, create just enough of an echo chamber to get one or more of them increasingly elevated privileges over time, then attempt primary objective. Since the guy's site vaguely covers financial topics, the target may not even be the site itself; it could just as easily be an effort to gather information about one or more of the site's users for use in a separate spearphishing or doxing attack.

For a somewhat related example, this type of attack has been famously used in EVE Online repeatedly, to devastating effect, with some of the most famous ones involving months of infiltration by multiple conspirators.
