Waste of bandwith
This reminds me of Microsofts little attempt at this with Joe or whatever. I say it is just a waste of bandwidth. People are actually annoyed by these things.

Re:Shooting themselves in the foot
It doesn't matter what operating system you use plagarism and copyright violations will exist. It is simply a case of the poor taking back from the rich (I like Robin Hood). Big corporations are sucking our economy and country dry while the average citizen is finding it harder and harder to make a comfortable living. When these conditions of inequality exist you can expect rebellion and in this case "stealing". I may not agree with breaking copyright laws myself but this doesn't change the fact that many americans do not believe it is wrong to make illegal copies of CD's, DVD's and other forms of media. This mentality is because they feel like the big media corporations are charging them too much and hence its payback time. Don't worry about the OS or the media, it doesn't really matter. If the large corporations would charge the average citizen a fair price for their products (ie. microsoft) instead of getting "fat" off of the land, then piracy will end. Its as simple as that.

WHAT IS REALITY?
Not to be overly religious or philosophical I think the Matrix does make us think about some real issues. I mean is our mortal existence really the bottom line. Maybe when we die we find that we are in the real world and that mortality was just another dimension to our existence. I think the reason that the Matrix strikes such a chord with its viewers is that it makes us confront this issue. I mean how real is our existence in this world we live in. Granted it is a very temporary existence when you consider that we nominally only live about 80 years and then we're gone. Obviously, there are different layers to our existence, wether its spiritual or in some other dimension. I guess what I am trying to say is that like the Matrix the people actually living within it were unable to see beyond it and actually see reality. In a sense that parallels with our mortal existence here on earth. To us all we see, feel, hear etc... is our tangible bodies and surroundings and are unable to see the big picture or beyond our physical 3-dimensional surroundings. We are trapped within our bodies and our world or physical universe. We cannot fathom or grasp anything beyond what are senses tell us exactly as the human beings living within the matrix. It appears real but is it really? Just my little two sense.

I agree this is just another move my money grubbing Gates. He's not stupid you know. Wouldn't be surprised to see him pull most of his stock out either. I mean if I was him I would probably pull out my fortune before there is nothing left.

BIG doesn't always mean BAD...
Ok, I admit that having so much of our media controlled by one company is a bit scary. But really we don't know how this is all going to turn out. I mean 20 years ago who would have guessed that a small upstart call microsoft would one day surpass a giant like IBM thats been around for over a hundred years. Our world changes rapidly and unpredictably, as it always has. We really have no idea what this merger is going to do. In fact, it may completely fall apart for that matter. The only thing about it that scares me is the monopoly it could possibly generate. Monopolies stifle competition and overcharge the end consumer. The next few years should tell us what is going to happen. If it goes badly then the government should step in and break it up like they did to ATT and are now doing with Microsoft. That is the governments responsibility, to protect the individual right of its citizens. So I'm not going to be negative on this, just yet.

Yes it is I've never laughed so much in years. This one is good. Stop complaining about karma crap. It doesn't mean anything anyway. Is that the only reason you come to slashdot just so you can get some "karma". I feel sorry for you if it was the case and I would simply say go get a life.

NO, More like Give them an Ultimatum...
I don't think your "ignore then and they'll stop" quite fits in this case. Its more like give them and ultimatum and they'll stop or completely shut them out and then they will stop. For most organizations it usually takes more than a slap on the hand to make them stop anything, especially spam. I think what UDP is doing is good though it will make @home take them seriously and actually make ammends. I was just wondering though who actually uses USENET anymore I mean the internet has evolved more into an e-commmerce type of phenomena and the older vestiges of the internet such as USENET are (it seems) rapidly decaying into extinction. In fact, I don't recall within the last year that I have even looked at USENET. I think its a thing of the past myself. Not that it had its time and place. I think that eventually we will see the internet evolve into more e-commerce but with a whole lot more content and bandwidth. I mean think if you could pay online and then quickly download a movie from blockbuster in DVD format instead of having to run over to the local Blockbuster Video to rent one. That is the future of the internet... if you ask me.

Its Amazing
It never fails to amaze me how back in the 50's and 60's everyone thought that by the new millenium we would be living like the Jepson Family. I mean if we knew then that our computers would be as stupid as they are (lack of any sort of AI) maybe it would have changed the outlook of the world somehow. Maybe, it was just the over optimism of the era, and maybe it actually was good for our society and world as a whole. Anyhow, it would be cool if something like HAL really was possible but I think that most people now realize that it pretty much belongs in the realms of science fiction only. Computers are only as smart as their programmer which ultimately is a human. What would be really cool though and maybe is even possible is computers that can learn on the fly and re-program themselves to perform tasks more efficiently. This is the sort of AI that is based in reality and would be of benefit to everyone. If anyone knows about this sort of research or could suggest a good website on the topic let me know. I've heard about some work on a computer that not only can re-program itself but can also alter its own hardware. Lately, though I haven't heard much on this subject, maybe its a dead end, I don't know. It is another interesting approach to AI though.

HELLO???
Whats your problem. You so pissed off because you work for some loser company that you can't be proud to work for? This company I work for is on the bleeding edge, always pushing the envelope. So maybe I'm a little proud of that. Whats so wrong with that. And by the way my posts are not spam... I am involved with technical issues as any other silicon valley techie out there. I worked for IBM before I came to this startup and let me tell you its been a breath of fresh air. My opinions and comments are just as much needed and educated as any other
/.er. Sorry you seem to have such a personal problem with me. Maybe, you could provide me with your email address and we can correspond to help ease your concerns. I don't appreciate personal attacks on myself or the company I work for.

DON'T YOU GET IT?
Stop whining. Of course you have to learn the techniques but the techniques were devised by these guys. Don't you believe in intellectual property rights. These people invented the whole concept... give them some credit. No one ever gives any credit to Xerox PARC. These guys invented all kinds of cool technology that we take for granted. I think its time that they get some kind of kickback for all the work they have done over the years. I say congratulations XEROX and keep up the good work.

I HOPE THE BUYOUT IS STOPPED
Right now we are buying our site license through thawte and I must say it is a pleasure to do business with them. There service is great and their price is right. I would hate to have to pay more to verisign just because the bought up thawte besides it scares me when one company grabs to much control over any one market. Then they get greedy and start charging customers outlandish prices (ie. microsoft). I say someone needs to stop this deal from going through. Thats just my two cents.

GIVE 'EM A CHANCE
Hey, give these guys a break. I mean if they are really fly by night as everyone suggests then they will wither up and go away. Of course be cautious when buying stock or products. I mean I know what its like to just start out as a small business, no one takes you serious and then after a while you start to build a reputation. If they are a real thing they will last, but there is no point in trashing them from the start... give 'em a chance at least.

However, you need to take into consideration that this is probably not their first language. I can speak and read Japanese, but if you asked me to write an article such as the one they wrote I would not even come close to their sincere attempt. Give people credit where credit is due.

THATS IT...
Call it what you will, spam, marketing whatever... But after visiting some of our competitors and realizing just how heated this price war has become we realized that our price must ultimately come down (almost to the point where there is no profit margin for us at all). Therefore, as of today our price for two years registration has now been decreased to $45 and $22.50 every year thereafter. Granted we still may not be as low as some international registrars (or as low as they claim to be) but we are the lowest price for domain names in the continental United States and Canada. We are proud to spearhead this domain name revolution and ask everyone to spread the word. Why let NSI get fat and rich off everyone else when their just simply ripping the end customer out of their few hard earned dollars. The way I see it a domain name should not cost even half as much as your web hosting account since it really doesn't consume any valuable resources such as space or bandwidth. I know some slashdotters are now going to crucify me for this post, but I don't care. I'm just so excited to say that we can actually offer this price to our retail customers and to everyone for that matter. Anyhow, if you don't think this is for real or it sounds to good to be true, call me and I'll answer whatever questions you might have. To all you erked slashdotters, I repeat this is not spam I am not necessarily trying to sell our services to anyone I am just trying to say that their are options and the masses, especially the technically adept masses, should know what is out there if they are willing to look.

RAMBUS SMAMBUS
We've been hearing about rambus for sometime now but when are we actually going to get to use the stuff. I begin to worry when we get a huge hype and then a lot of delay... it smells of microsoft or microsoftesque. You know what I mean. By the time they actually get this stuff to work something else is going to come along and blow it away. Thats how the computing world works. It moves fast and if you don't keep up your forgotten history.

Our Answer (this is not SPAM either)
As the president of NPS Interne Solutions, LLC I'm not going to make any comment about the above posting since the last time I did every Slashdotter from here to Mars labelled me a spammer and practically stoned me to death (not literally of course). I am happy to say that we with a few other companies have spearheaded the decline in domain name registration prices. My only hope is that the prices will continue to decrease so that everyone can realistically afford a domain name. I agree with some of the other postings here... The domain name business is to money hungry. It doesn't take $35 from every customer to maintain a rather simple database. I project that the price of a domain will probably decrease to around $30 per two year registration. In fact, right now we are looking at reducing our own price to $50 for two years and then $25 thereafter. Lets just say the war is on, and everyone is a winner. Happy Y2K to all you
/.ers. This is my first post of the new millennium and it sures fills good to be back (can't beat a good holiday).

YOU MAKE A GOOD POINT!
Thats the problem the average grunt is too focused on military brewhash to spend the hours upon hours in front of a computer learning the art/science of hacking and cracking. I mean lets think about it what kind of person is your average hacker? He sure isn't that stereotypical gungho GI JOE we are used to. Pyscologically the average GI is not well suited for this kind of job. Lets face it Hackers and Crackers are a specialized lot who for one usually have an IQ or 160 and two don't care a whole lot for institutionalized training such as the army/military provide. Mentally they're far beyond that, its demorallizing to them. Trust me I know. I went to boot camp myself when I enlisted in the national guard (a very stupid choice on my part) and it amazed me that some of the other recruits actually found the training "fullfilling". I found it time wasteful, redundant, and the practicality of it pretty much useless. I don't mean to put down the US military but this kind of institutionalized training and environment does not give way to thinking and actually challenging one self. I found my biggest challenge in life came when I started my own company... thats when I had to use my "smarts" to their max. Your point is a very good one. I hope what I said makes sense.

THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS LONG AGO...
It never fails to amaze me how slow the government is to catching on to new technology or new trends within society. They should have used these kinds of tactics long ago. I mean think of all the brain power (resources) we are letting go to waste. Its no wonder why there are so many hackers, I mean what do you do when you get bored? You usually start messing around in things that get you into trouble. All that these hackers are, are extremely intelligent individuals who have become bored with life around them. They are looking for a challenge so they start hacking at bigger and bigger targets such as the Pentagon. We need to harness this excess of brainpower and employ it in our national defence or other similar tasks. Hackers and crackers are usually not criminal at heart they just need to focus their energy into more productive activities. I applaud the US government on taking a stand in their quest for computer and security whizzes. I mean lets face it these guys are the best. If they can hack into a secure site like the US military or the Whitehouse then obviously they are the best. So why not pay them what they are worth otherwise they will use their talents in other places. Its simply a matter of harnessing our resources, and one of America's greatest resources is its highly intelligent crackers and hackers.

CONTENT IS WHAT COUNTS!
I don't think so much the version number is the problem as what exactly is the content change of the new version. Thats what people are after. If the new version is somehow going to improve their computing experience then it is worth it and people will upgrade and/or buy it. Forget about the marketing aspect, thats what it is simply marketing. A new version of linux could be named "winux" for marketing purpose but might simply be version 7. No one cares about the version number just us techies.
My point is, is that quality and content is number #1. Take us for example, we offer domain name registration for $55. Its simple, to the point and what everyone wants... cheaper prices. No one could care less if we use a version 4 or version 5 template in our registration process. Version number is mostly transparent to the end user in most cases, as it should be.
Thats my two cents on the subject.
