Start here: Open Cascade claims to be open sourceStart here: Open Cascade claims to be open source, but isn't:
Open CASCADE Technology is software development platform freely available in open source. It includes components for 3D surface and solid modeling, visualization, data exchange and rapid application development.
But this isn't an OSI approved license: Open CASCADE Technology Public License (version 6.2) This company has been abusing the definition of "open source" for years. A shame really, as the software is very nice.
Open CASCADE Technology can be best applied in development of numerical simulation software including CAD/CAM/CAE, AEC and GIS, as well as PDM applications.
The Technology exists from the mid 1990-s and has already been used by numerous commercial clients belonging to different domains from software edition to heavy industry.
The platform is provided by the Company bearing the same name Open CASCADE S.A. For its clients the Company offers custom development and technical support services. For more information on the Company please visit www.opencascade.com -

Re:I don't think it's so nefarious.
Which is at opencascade.com and
.org by the way.

You might try
You might try looking into Open Cascade with regards to industrial computer-aided drafting.

Re:You sparked my interest . . .There's also Opencascade.com and OpenCascade.org, with which you can build high quality CAD software. For example, the GPL-licensed exoTK CAD application is built using OpenCascade. See the screenshots here. Many other industrial CAD solutions are built using OpenCascade.
The OpenCascade license, although they call it open source, doesn't seem to be one of the approved Open Source licenses yet, though.
From the OpenCascade.com website:
Open CASCADE is an EADS Matra Datavision subsidiary, founded in January 2001. The 100-member team (including 80 developers) works in France. The company's mission is to provide services and support for industrial users, software editors and research workers for their development projects based on Open CASCADE 3D modeling components.

Re:All the interesting positions in Linux are takeTake a look at Matra's Open Cascade. There's still a lot of work to do on it, it's really more a library at this point. But when it does have an interface it will be as much advanced beyond AutoCAD as IBM's Catia is. In other words, no more tricycle, it's a real high-end CAD system. The license isn't GPL but looks completely ok and open to me. [license]
If any project deserves developers, it's this one.

Re: Open Cascade...
Open Cascade has put out really nice screenshots, but their business model is centered around support. Which is fine by me, but its really a pain to use --its a nuissance! I mean, I think that it still needs a little work on the UI.

AutoCad - Help is on it's way!
Unfortunately I have to use Win9x/NT at work because the software that is essential to my profession is only win based (AutoCAD R14)
Perhaps you haven't heard of Matra Open Cascade?
This is more a library than a full CAD environment but don't kid yourself - sticking a good front end on it is something you can do in a few weeks with Glade or QT. So I guess that means we'll have full-blown CAD, open source, GPL for Linux within the year. Let me very clear about this also: Open Cascade is to AutoCAD as a Bulldozer is to a wheelbarrow.
