Re:Sketchup is an awesome tool for set designers
Have you tried FreeCAD?
Yes. I was really impressed. It's based on OpenCascade a truly industrial strength BREP engine at the level used by Catia and other AAA CAD titles. It's mostly history-driven now, but the GUI as far as it goes is really good. I was able to do boolean combinations just by poking around, no tutorials, no howtos. FreeCAD is built by people who know what they're doing.

Re:Commercial vs Free
Yet good stuff is emerging - see for example VTK for visualization or the OpenCascade library.
A few years back 3D visualization of math and physics was a pain in the neck, but these days you've got a change to poke at fairly simple APIs of free libraries that do an amazing job.
I agree CAD is tricky, but these examples tell me that we'll get there at some point.

Re:Client vs. Server Applications
You can doubt all you want, but both varkon and opencascade are used for some high-end stuff, as a cursory glance at screenshots would show.
Varkon is better than most CAD packages in the way that LaTeX is better than Microsoft Word for professional document layout. Though again, varkon in particular probably doesn't work like other cad packages you're used to, being pervasively parametric. But don't mistake that for being "worse" than other cad packages - it's often much better if you're doing serious stuff.
Other CAD: BRL-CAD is still somewhat specialised towards military electromagnetic applications, but is a very nice CSG modeller. -

Open CASCADE Technology is software development platform freely available in open source. It includes components for 3D surface and solid modeling, visualization, data exchange and rapid application development.
But this isn't an OSI approved license: Open CASCADE Technology Public License (version 6.2) This company has been abusing the definition of "open source" for years. A shame really, as the software is very nice.
Open CASCADE Technology can be best applied in development of numerical simulation software including CAD/CAM/CAE, AEC and GIS, as well as PDM applications.
The Technology exists from the mid 1990-s and has already been used by numerous commercial clients belonging to different domains from software edition to heavy industry.
The platform is provided by the Company bearing the same name Open CASCADE S.A. For its clients the Company offers custom development and technical support services. For more information on the Company please visit www.opencascade.com -

Re:How about the state of 3D Parametric Modelling?
this what your looking for?
Open CASCADE
http://www.opencascade.org/
-ps it is a bitch to use and has a crappy ui. -
opencascade
The opencascade library is now open source. It's the 3D library, so it has no GUI, but the whole core is there. It just need someone to work a little Qt/GTK magic: http://www.opencascade.org/

Re:Title is completely wrong
You are correct in that fully capable software is a long time off, but there has to be some short cut to a basic CAD for Linux. Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but surely the market will soon support solutions derived from an existing renderer (Blender), 2D CAD (QCAD), existing 3D (Cycas, arcad, ICAADS, OpenCascade) or a CAD/CAM (VariCAD) before AutoDesk can turn their ship around. It doesn't even have to be OS/FS, although I would think a FS system could eventually take the market.

CAx softwareMostly from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_open_source_
s oftware_packages. I've used most, usually for some part of a design or analysis. You could do engineering with only these (people used to not use computers at all), but you are correct that they aren't always "polished." They do, however, work fine for the patient, idealistic hobbyist who doesn't want to spend much money:- CAE Linux - A LiveCD which lets you try out SALOME and Code-Aster
- Quanitan - A LiveCD with QCad,
- Impact - Finite element
- QCad - 2D CAD
- BRL-CAD - 3D CAD
- Open CASCADE - software development platform for 3D CAD, CAM, CAE, etc.
- Code_Aster - FEM
- Salome - pre/post processing

OpenCascade

It is a big package far more capable that most commercial apps and is open source. -

http://www.opencascade.org/ should do all you need open source. Has some rather high system requirments but it seems to be a good program.

Matra OpenCascade
I just thought I'd mention OpenCascade
Very much underappreciated:

Re:CAD
Open CASCADE is a 3D CAD. It started out as high end CAD software, didn't keep up, was bought, and turned open source. Please not it is made available under a special license that, while resembling the LGPL, has (AFAIK) not been approved or even submitted for OSS certification.

Re:You sparked my interest . . .There's also Opencascade.com and OpenCascade.org, with which you can build high quality CAD software. For example, the GPL-licensed exoTK CAD application is built using OpenCascade. See the screenshots here. Many other industrial CAD solutions are built using OpenCascade.
The OpenCascade license, although they call it open source, doesn't seem to be one of the approved Open Source licenses yet, though.
From the OpenCascade.com website:
Open CASCADE is an EADS Matra Datavision subsidiary, founded in January 2001. The 100-member team (including 80 developers) works in France. The company's mission is to provide services and support for industrial users, software editors and research workers for their development projects based on Open CASCADE 3D modeling components.

Re:All the interesting positions in Linux are take
Not autocad equivalent, but useful none the less:
varkon is a competent, GPL, parametric (and parametric only :-( ), 3D CAD system.
It's popular in europe for making application-specific CAD frontends, say living room designs, with furniture you just plonk down, or aircraft, with wings you that you just say "wing here, aerfoil type NACA-32" or whatever - i.e. it's good at parametrics. It sucks for simple on-the-fly autocad-newbie-style drawing though.
opencascade is a VERY powerful open source solid modelling 3D kernel, a little like the ACIS kernel AutoCAD uses - but there's no finished end-user CAD system built around it. Yet...
