Gee, thanks. I'd have never found either of those without your help (as I sit here with both firefox and konqueror running in my linux desktop).

Nobody wants your pity. But if you were running an e-commerce site, I bet you'd want to drive traffic *to* your site, instead of *away*, which was the whole point of my initial respose.
> Tell you what, if you're too lazy to upgrade to a real browser, I don't *want* you to view my
> website. GTF on.
Honestly, that's not a problem for me. For *your* sake, however, I hope you're not the guy selling the next thing I'm shopping for online while I'm in my XP desktop. Because if you've barred the door to me (as the parent suggested), I will GTF on and line someone else's pocket.
I'll bet if you were one of the websites I spend money on, you'd want me to be able to view your site.
> Karma be damned, people like you who can't spend 30 seconds to make sure their computer is

Honestly, you really should get off the "anti-anything-MS" bandwagon and think for yourself. I can spend all the time I want installing software. In fact, I spent plenty of time re-partitioning my laptop to dual boot XP and Linux and then installing and configuring Linux.
The point was - "why drive traffic AWAY from your site, when the whole point of HAVING a site is to drive traffic TO the damn thing". I'll repeat, if you have a hobby site of some kind and you want to close the door to everyone who doesn't agree with your software choices, then the world is no worse off. If you have a business site and you close the door to anyone who doesn't have your favorite brand installed, then the world is *still* no worse off - but your business is certainly suffering for your personal prejusice.
However, if you're a business, or a businessman, then you understand that money doesn't know what browser you're using, it doesn't know if you're MS-aphobic, MS-aholic or somewhere in between. What you *do* know is that your goal is to get Mr. Customer's money from his pocket and into yours. You will not accomplish that goal if you bar them from the store.
I mean, really ... all I said was, rather than bar the door, put a note at the top, bottom, or somewhere "optimized for brand X browser" and provide a link - why all the venom?

Re:Auto-boycot
This just furthers Microsoft's point of keeping IE's non-compliance as a de-facto standard.
What you just said, in simpler terms is:
Microsoft's browser can't render CSS properly.
Don't complain about it or try to get it to change.
Don't try and get your userbase to upgrade.
Work around it, instead.
So, I write standards compliant code. You're telling me to break my code JUST so it looks good on some toolsack's browser who hasn't updated since IE5.5!? Further proof people should have to take an exam to be allowed on the internet.
PS - Spend the five minutes and get a *REAL* browser! http://www.opera.com/ or http://www.mozilla.com./ I have absolutely no pity for idiots who complain about how this site and that site don't look right on their browser and how they'll browse somewhere else. Tell you what, if you're too lazy to upgrade to a real browser, I don't *want* you to view my website. GTF on.
Karma be damned, people like you who can't spend 30 seconds to make sure their computer is actually running properly shouldn't be able to use them. -

Re:I like your favourite quote and I hope M$ dies.
Well, i take care of 100's of websites and i'm actually very happy MS are pusing it through as an auto update. However, alot of the css bug fixes are still not implemented, so for now on, im goin to put my ieonly div within the if[ie] command to display the following: IE Fix Your browser might not render the page as intended. Please upgrade to a css compliant browser like opera or firefox You may laugh, but i feel i should stop catering for Microshafts incompetence, and the only way to do this, it to show Microshaft what happens when they create inferior products. I'm serious about this BTW!

Re:Oh, the pornography!
Opera has voice recognition...
(except it's only supported on Windows. Lazy!)

Re:Why?
Depends what system you're running it on. If your system is a PC that makes little sense of course (even if you want a remote desktop that's what terminal applications are for). But imagine you were using one of those gaming systems with a web browser like the PSP, the DS or the Wii.

Firefox is based on GTK
No, it's based on XUL. This is why it doesn't look like anything else and that's why it is so goddamn difficult to make it look okay: you have to program your own skins, unlike Opera, where it's done with
.ini files and PNG images like people are used to since the age of Winamp.Opera won't fit in on my gnome destop at all.

Re:Right now...
Firefox is based on GTK and so it fits right in with Gnome, except for a minor problem with the scrollbars (the up and down tabs are always squared off). Opera won't fit in on my gnome destop at all. So on linux, Opera does fit KDE better than Firefox is, and for gnome the reverse is true. Firefox actually uses my Gnome theme to draw the widgets (or emulates them very well).
And on windows you get things like this:
http://www.opera.com/img/products/desktop/screensh ots/bittorrent.jpg
Sorry, but that is not a native-looking windows XP app. It looks like the crappy consumer Symantec Antirvirus UI. It reminds me of the first Mozilla versions with their owner-drawn controls that weren't themed native at all. -
Re:Opera compatibility vs the other two?
if everything works on Firefox with the IETab extension, but doesn't render right on Opera, where does the problem lie?
You can't be serious. What you said is equivalent in logic to:
if everything works on IE, but doesn't render right on Opera, where does the problem lie?
To come back to your intended point: Opera renders everything okay. Version 9 now has per page settings and user javascript, so compatibility stuff can much more easily worked. If you have any trouble, refer to Open the Web initiative.
Another goodie: I can make it even remember my credentials on my online banking site where other browsers would refuse to.

This has got to be the most universally disliked change in Opera 9 - their forums are full of complaints about this new nuisance (I personally despise it). I fully expect to see that "feature" removed in Opera 9.01. Opera has been my favorite browser for years and keeps getting better, but every so often they throw in some clunker change like this.

Re:Opera?
Opera Mini - a-less-than-100Kb Java ME application that makes web surfing on a bog standard phone a joy.
Free, of course. -
Re:Opera's UI is slick?
Opera's UI is extremely customizable. Skinnable interface and lots of flexibility with toolbar and button placement, on the output side. On the input side, you can set up your own keyboard shortcuts and mouse gestures if you don't like the default ones.

Re:All hail Flash.
The W3C doesn't make the browsers. Yes, sometimes their specs are vague at best, but at least we have guidelines for the browsers.
As for Flash, it's not available for all platforms. There's also some people who turn off plug-ins because of Flash. I, myself, don't want to see Flash banners. I also don't visit websites done Flash even if it's only the navigation done in Flash. IMHO, Flash should only be used for online games and such.
Also, by using Flash you're blocking visitors using something else than a computer, which will soon become quite a good chunk of users. More users than Macs + Linux, I'd have to guess.
It's fine if it's for your personnal website and that you don't care, but for something like a business website, cutting even 5% of possible customers is simply insane. -
Re:Do you really need powerpoint or similar?Powerpoint really doesn't do anything extra for the presentation. It helps the lazy presenter, for which I am grateful, but I don't believe it helps the audience.
One of the lesser used features of Opera is the Opera Show Presentation format which is a nifty (albeit non-standard) way of presenting a slide show (power point like) presentation which is also represented in CSS and HTML. This could be the basis for the "web based" presentation.
As far as the point about web-based presentations goes, your comment "if the presentation is not public, then putting it on a web server might not be the brightest thing to do" can be applied to the PPT file as well. The web-based presentation doesn't have to be on a network server - simply a collection of local files would work as well.

Re:Or
Crashing browsers is a huge PITA. Do you like your history? Do you keep multiple tabs open. All that is gone when your browser SEGVs.

Re:Once they integrate enough extensions
people would rather have a fast browser that can use extentions than a slow browser with everything in it by default.
And yet there's ample evidence that it's possible to have a fast browser with everything in it by default, so I don't think those are the only choices...

Re:Only one thing needed
The only thing that isn't possible is to have both the main menu and other stuff in the same toolbar.
Actually, it is possible. You can put a button or buttons on any toolbar that pops up the main menu (or any menu at all), then hide the menu bar.

Re:Niggling
Have you even USED simpy.com recently? It's a mess and I suggest that you avoid it. The main resons beeing...
1. It's slow. Some days, it's impossible to access the site. (Though not an issue anymore, see 2!)
2. It's broken. Quite funny that you mention automatic online backups to simpy.com when it's not even possible to login with Opera (yes, simpy.com claims that it works with Opera, but it doesn't. If you don't believe me, try it yourself or read the post that the author of simpy posted to the Opera forums - the issue described there is old, but still unresolved.
3. It's annoying to use when you do not have Firefox's LiveBookmarks. This can be fixed, for example, thanks to the glorious Web 2.0, by using the available API. Now here's the fun part: If you have, for some reason, recently written your own sidebar, you will be excited to find that, as of a month ago, it no longer works well - now only the most recent items are exported. It may be very "Web 1.0" of me, but I'd rather access all of my bookmarks - ah, well, I guess it doesn't matter as long as I can find out who visited the same sites that I did and how many people have "Google" filed under "web search" in their bookmark list... -
Re:Extensions
I'm curious what the point of that is though? The English install is 4.6MB, and you'll find this of interest: http://my.opera.com/FataL/blog/show.dml/298429. If you ignore the multi-language installer, Opera's install size has increased about 500kb over the past five years.
And the size of the installable package I am currently downloading from the opera site is 5.1mb not 4.6mb (FreeBSD version, English language, and no, it is not the statically linked version). That said, the size of the install package is interesting, but by far not as interesting as the memory footprint or actual disk space used after installation (not that Opera does bad in those usually, but I rather think that modularizing it more and only loading the actual modules used will help the memory footprint) -
Re:Niggling
Ah, Alt+F11 was Linux specific for some reason. Anyway, you can find lots of other interesting shortcuts at http://help.opera.com/Windows/9.00/en/keyboard.ht
m l. But that's only a small selection, really. Most everything in Opera can be bound to a mouse gesture or keyboard shortcut. Just go to Tools->Preferences->Advanced->Shortcuts. -
Re:Extensions
Opera is relatively fast but not the fastest
Compared to what? http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/browserSpeed.html
An API for extentions would mean it can be made even leaner since you can effectively strip off functionality that is not used often and put it into an extension for those who need it.

I'd like to point out that such a degree of integration allows a sharing of code that isn't possible with extensions. That's why the size increase has been so tiny despite the significant difference in featuresets between 6.0 and 9.0.

Interesting fanatism towards software . . .
. . . cause something like this: some people complaining about the lack of some features that actually exist in Opera 9!!!

Re:Better UI
Isn't button shading just a property of the currently installed skin? There are lots of different skins to try:

Re:Pesky users
I'm not paying them so I don't have much right to complain, fair enough.
A lot of open source developers want you to think that as an excuse for their code sucking. But it's simply not true. You have every right to complain. In the case of Mozilla, they even have a complete system for people to complain, Bugzilla.
You have no expectation of them listening to your complaints, but you have every right to complain about problems with the application. The developers have every right to not pay attention - and in response, you have every right to not use their project.
Feedback is a very important part of an open source project. The idea that users have no right to complain because a project is open source is bogus - open source developers should appreciate complaints, because it's a sign that people want to improve their project!
So go ahead and complain about open source projects. They'll never improve if people don't complain. If the developers are too pig-headed to listen to their users, then the project will die as the users go elsewhere. Complaints are an important part of any development process, and open source doesn't get to be immune to complaints just because it's open source. Shoddy software is shoddy software, open source included. -

Re:Anyone haveYep, see also Firefox and Opera for more examples of this mindset. I think it's a decent solution. Those not including a DOCTYPE were hardly understanding exactly what they were coding for anyway, and then it's a pretty darn tough job for a web browser to act a mind reader.
Of course, the Lawful Evil solution would be to pop up a message saing "Invalid HTML document" if no DOCTYPE was present. ... and watch your browser's usage share plummet. :-p -
