Re:why recompress?
Use this program to make unencrypted mpegs that you can play on your own player. The poster is just trying to view his own movies; fair use by any ethical standards.
Instead of blacking them out, he should admit that copyright law sucks. If six people may watch the same movie at the same time on the same player, it stands to reason that it should be legal for six people to watch the same movie at the same time on six different players. Get the law changed, and then go after the MPAA's trust. $25 for a dvd is freakin highway robbery! -
true
but the author's point was that Symantec isn't allowing whitelisting of sites or an option to be asked to show ads on a particular site, thus supporting the site's maintainer.
If anyone buys adspace on my site, I might care. Until then, feel free to block them. I don't see any ads in Linux, OpenBSD, etc. VIM's "poor children in uganda" ad probably isn't paying any bills. We don't make this stuff for money, we make it to ease karma for all the free software we use. The web needs to figure out a similar model, if one exists. -
I survived, with such a pipe.
But my site wasn't linked to from the main page, doesn't have large downloads, and doesn't have large images. Even the logo was text, rather than graphical, at the time.

programming
I always stayed up until a few hours before I had to go to school last semester. I nearly failed French.
At the same time, I was working on an extremely educational (to me at least) programming project and some web sites.
Would my school's system see my drop in French test scores as a sign of impending doom? Would it correlate that with the departure of Jane Doe, who dropped out due to a pregnancy and accuse me of being the father?
Had I been sidetracked, I never would have had this site of mine on this slasdot article. I wouldn't have gotten a local computer store to invest time/money in my first commercial program.
You can't reduce anything as complex as a human being to mere comprehendable numbers. Anyways, this new system sounds like it'll be great fun to mess with.
(On another note, it's hilarious how schools are scared to put a picture of a student on the school's website without a notorized rights waver, yet they jump at the chance to make a national database of students.) -
why bother?
My zaurus, running OpenZaurus, came with a terminal and the ssh command.
If I was stuck with a phone as a terminal, I'd probably write a curses script like this one to give me functionality without typing on such a painfully slow keyboard. -
SCO's is worse.
They are demanding that the code become their property Under GPL, code remains the property of its author.
Check out osnippets for a fun way to report SCO piracy. -

woah
A friend just told me I was
/.ed. Sorry that the site is on such a slow line, I'll be moving it to a faster one tomorrow.
As for the name, it's open if you can read it. If you are trying to get code for commercial software, check out planet source code. I might change the default license in the near future, but it isn't very likely. Submissions can specify their license of choice in their comments.
Email me with any suggestions, complaints, burning garbage, or offers of endorsement. -
same thing, on a budget
I made a an XMMS console remote and ran it from my zaurus over wifi. I know use a dedicated MP3 server that mounts my music over samba and lives inside my stereo.
The script could easily be adapted for use in almost any control environment. Up/down+enter for easy use on the Zaurus w/out typing. -
PowerPC Linux port?
As I constantly bitch on my programming site, J2DK/RE 1.4 still hasn't been released for Linux on PowerPC. I love my iBook and plan to buy an iMac; if the two are left further behind for Java I just might abandon it. "Write once run anywhere." is meaningless if most platforms don't have new features for years.
I recently switched to C for a few projects; the speed is surreal by comparison -

They just want to hide nudity.
[Congress for a]llowing $8,000 in tax dollars to be spent on drapes to conceal two semi-nude statues that often appeared behind the attorney general during press conferences in the Great Hall of the Department of Justice. Ironically, the two statues represent "The Spirit of Justice" and "The Majesty of Law." They are scared to death of the naked truth. Here/a. is a mirror in the event that the original site goes down.

civil disobediance?
Let's start overclocking, enhancing, and reverse engineering EVERYTHING to protest these laws.
Preventing overclocking is just corportate bs. Remember the liminal messaging of Brave New World, "I'm tired of old things. I want new things. If it's broken, don't fix it. Throw old things away."
In all honesty, people probably break as many chips as they enhance and overclocking helps profits for chip makers. Anyways, you can use this code, compared against the time/date clock to determine if a chip is overclocked. Software/electronic patents are a bunch of bullcrap for things like this because it's so damn simple to recreate the effect. -
Re:already /.'ed?
Here is a mirror. Apparently the cheap-ass version doesn't have such a connector.

recommendations?
I've been programming for half my life (since I was 8 y/o) in one language or another, and I'm planning on graduating highschool a full year early. I have experience administrating a multi-user server with users ranging from clueless website admins to fellow developers. I also have experience in automotive mechanics and electronics.
1. How much will a graduate/undergraduate degree affect my eventual wages as a programmer?
2. If I got an electrical engineering degree instead of a computer science degree, would I be able to make more as an embedded technology developer? In the automotive industry?
3. Is college much better than highschool course-wise?
4. Will running various website such as this, that, and the other one help me with admissions? With scholarships?
5. If you woke up and it was X many years ago, would you redo college and grad school, or just go on to a career?
6. Know of any good tech scholarships? -
OSnippets.org not mentioned!?
On Sunday I started this site for sharing open sourced code snippets between authors online.
I suppose this is for the best, our connection would crap with a lot less than /.ing.
