this is not a new idea
for at least the last 3 or 4 years, a company called overpeer has been doing this for hire in the music industry. labels would pay them a fee, and they would get a few hundred (or thousand) hosts on all of the p2p networks that claimed:
- high bitrates
- high bandwidth
- full artist catalogs
except all of they files they offered had been re-sampled like 10x, so the music was equivalent to about 24kbps... :) they used to have a large presence in some of the northeast datacenters, but since they got aquired by loudeye, they seem to have moved some gear around. -
Re:As sad as it is
To have to burst your bubble of uninformed zealotry, there are plenty of good uses for trusted computing and DRM that do no interfere with your quest to get 'fr33 musicz 4 life' or whatever. Not all of this technology is for companies like the RIAA to protect copyrights, despite what Slashbots would have everyone think.
Bet you could use this to stop Overpeer from fucking around with your p2p network :D -
Re:So how..
I guess they won't for long...

Re:Take a lesson
The RIAA and MPAA should take a lesson.
Actually, Valve are the ones taking a lesson from the RIAA and MPAA.
They have done a solid job and snuffing out pirating
Not that solid. The real HL2 was warezed and cracked on November 16.
while managing to avoid pissing off their consumer base.
You can't be talking about Steam, can you?
This is the way companies should protect their IP, not by using the government as their own private band of thugs.
I agree. But I see no evidence that Valve have accomplished anything extraordinary as far as combatting piracy goes. In fact, this sort of terroristic rumormongering probably indicates the opposite, assuming its ultimate source is Valve. -
Anyone else notice....
Overpeer's web site seems to be completely dead? Can't connect with a browser, ping, or traceroute at all.

Re:Anybody have a link to overpeer's site?
I think overpeer.com would be a fair bet, only why would a company with such a low profile niche business care to build a Web site?
It had been noted on Slashdot before that using whatever technological means to prevent file sharing is fair game. Overpeer is posting looped versions of newer albums, and thus the old argument about people sharing indie songs or old music is not valid here, since that group remains largely unaffected.
It will be interesting to see what technological counter-measures the community as a whole would be able to come up with.
