Re:Am I alone?in the logic class you took, it apparently means 100%.
Ah, so you're no stranger to sarcasm.
and cite a few more "exceptions". i can always use the list to find the better picks out there.
Perfect Blue is simply an adorable anime. Look at her! Isn't she just so cute with blood splattered all over her?
It's also so wonderfully lighthearted how in Akira the main character's girlfriend first gets beat up by a bunch of thugs and then later gets crushed to death by the main character.
Oh, yeah, and Ninja Scroll was sooooooooooo cute - especially the tentacle rape scene!
Finally, there's Barefoot Gen in which the most darling thing happens to Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.
For other really cute and fuzzy anime, try Blue Gender, The Wings of Honneamise, Iria, Appleseed, Witch Hunter Robin, Patlabor, Macross Plus, MD Geist, Ghost in the Shell, and Lain.
Sheesh, even Star Blazers showed people getting shot in the back, multiple suicides, and main characters dying.
Seriously, though, one thing that could help you pick something more to your liking would be the reviews at Anime on DVD.

Re:Anime != geek!!!
While I agree they arent synonymous and they shouldnt be, I'll tell you why I watch anime.
The majority of shows I see on television are crap. There are a few exceptions, but by and large the shows are all the same. Crime, mystery, sitcoms. One show, recently cancelled that accually fit outside the mold was Dead like Me, which I enjoyed quite a bit.
Anime provides an open medium. When you are drawing your characters and environment, you are completely unlimited in what you can do. It makes for more interesting stories - more fantasy or scifi. Plus, in the anime genre, its quite common for the run to be limited to one over-arching plot line - often in increments of 13 episodes - most commonly in 26 episodes. I'm of the opinion that good stories can sometimes take a while to explain.
They make anime for every age group - from kids to adults to pervs - girls and guys alike. There is something for everyone.
I usually introduce people to anime with a combination of Perfect Blue - quite possibly the most freaky suspense movie I've ever seen. Also, Spirited Away the highest grossing film in Japanese history - more Disney, but still quite good.
Take the plunge - its worth it. Especially if you lack movies with ninjas and big fucking swords. -
Re:Space considerationsThe anime, Perfect Blue shows how small Japanese apartments are as well. The main character is a fairly successful pop singer who tries to get into acting, and her apartment is still super tiny.

Re:A reality check, and short play!
I was going to write a through and complex argument about common logical errors (Dragonball is, sadly, Anime but not all Anime is Dragonball).
But then I realized all I had to do to refute this was to tell the troll to go see Perfect Blue, WHICH IS LINKED IN THE ARTICLE.
A troll about Anime could have been done so much better...

Perfect Blue
The Anime Perfect Blue is currently playing in movie theaters across the United States. Perfect Blue breaks away from the traditional giant robots / technology theme and focuses on a japanese sub-culture and psychological issues. The Animation quality is certainly up to the Levels of the anime classic Ghost in the Shell. Definetly worth checking out if you are lucky enough to live in a major US city.

Re:Not exactly about programming, but...I'll second this one. Although the movie isn't centered around computers, they do play a fairly important role. (An idol singer turned actress discovers that somebody has a website about her, which shows a disturbing knowledge about her, and there was email being sent around.)
